View Full Version : Hollowing the backplate

I've contoured the backplate on the mando I'm building using Andrew's handy topo map which gives the very nice ridge that extends out to the heel button. The plans I'm working from are MacRostie's, and they also indicate the ridge.

What I'm a little hazy on is how to hollow the inside of the plate in that area, or how to transition that very thick area where the ridge is into the neckblock area. It'd be nice if the plan had a longitudinal section through the centerline of the back to clarify this, but it doesn't.

So I'm asking for advice- what's supposed to happen here?

I believe tha plan shows back thickness (in parentheses)to increase from .22" to around .35 directly over the ridge where it approaches the tail block, and falling off in graduation to either side.
The section directly under the neck block,of course, remains uncarved and flat. Hope that helps.
