Hi all,

For your viewing and listening pleasure, here is a version of David Long's tune January Nightmare. Such a rare thing, a mandolin tune in G minor. Do you know of any other mandolin/fiddle tunes in G minor?

The mandolin is built from a kit purchased at International Violin, finished about 2,5 years ago.

Once again, good picking. As far as other G minor tunes go Kentucky Mandolin and Crossing the Cumberlands both are.

Jonas, your playing and the mandolin both sound good.
FWIW your command of the English language (at least in written form) is very good.

That was really nice. I enjoyed it VERY much. You know how on youtube you are listening to something and think, all right, that's enough of that, then turn it off before it's done? I did not get that feeling at all with this video. Great picking.

Yes imapickn, I do know that feeling. Seems like it happens all the time on Utoob. Thanks for the compliment.

I'm gonna try to check out som of the other tunes in G minor mentioned here, it's a fun key to play in.

Can't forget Rattlesnake, one of my favorite Dawg tunes in Gm. Also, New Camptown and others that revolve around the relative major are good for getting comfortable with the key signature. Great playing, good luck on the new tunes.

Since Grisman tunes are allready mentioned (Rattlesnake is in the previous post), one must not forget Opus 54 (or was it 53 and there´s great Clarence White guitar picking on the Muleskinner album, Tony Rice does good on this one too).

Very Nice! Jonas
Do you have January Nightmare tabbed out? Would love to get a copy of it. There is a version on Mandozine but it's different from yours. I dig your version.

Perro Azul (Blue Dog).

...but that might not be fair since I wrote it.

Isn't Baltimore Johnny in G minor?

BTW - Really nice picking on that one Jonas!

Thanks jamann. I have not tabbed it out I'm afraid, I usually do this by ear. Listening to the recording and try to figure out what is going on. As far as the tab in MandoZine, is it available online? Can you post a link to it? If it's a different version, it might be because David Long is tuned differently than standard tuning on the cut on Stomp. I heard that might be the case, though I never knew.

Mandopete - Thanks!

On John Rossbach's CD "From the Mountains to the Mill" he does a really cool instrumental mando tune in G minor called "The Sawtelle Blues," a tribute to the late bluegrass guitarist Charles Sawtelle. The Buckhannon Brothers cover it on their CD "Back Home Again." It is one of my favorite tunes on mandolin, and really cool to play.
