i own 5 mandolins - compared to some collections, a modest quantity, to be sure - but if the house were on fire and i only had time to grab one, this semper fi-ve, m-4 mid-missouri would be the one i'd choose:

I don't like to think about it. Sophie's Choice and all...

I would grab my computer. It has all of my music, digital photographs, and writings I've accumulated over the years. The instruments I can replace, those other things, not easily. Just for grins though... My Spira and Labraid live right next to each other and I have 2 hands. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Family first, computer second, instruments next.

Family can't be replaced. Original photos and messages (triggers for memories) can't be replaced. Instruments can be replaced.

If my family and my computer were safe...

Old Wave Mandolin (http://homepage.mac.com/philg2/OldWaveA/PhotoAlbum15.html) then Spira Mandola (http://homepage.mac.com/philg2/SpiraPix/PhotoAlbum19.html).

Sweet Pea and Kid Mo are, um, expendable.

I'd grab my wife first, then the dog, then the Randy Wood and the D-28.

The kid, nothing else would matter. That's the insurance company's problem. They'd probably settle for a Rover A style and call it even.

Weber Fern. I don't believe the OP was implying that we grab a mandolin and leave the wife and kids behind. I think he is looking for what we consider our favorite mandolin! The fire is to remove any posibility of saving them all!

Well, a few months ago I ran to the tornado room with the baby in one arm and my Brian Dean cytole in the other. The last time the sirens went off my wife grabbed the baby and I grabbed the Brian Dean, the Arches and the Fern. The dog always happily trots along; no need to grab him.

My beautiful Gibson Goldrush ... but wait! It's already in my basment music room. That is my storm seller. I remember when my house was built the basement area was veins of solid rock that had to be pounded out. Makes a pretty good safe area from tornadoes and the like. But we're talking about a fire ... if there's a fire I head out the daylight basement doors toward the lake with my little blond fern in hand. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I think I'd take my K-1, the others can be replaced. The K-1 is worth a lot more than it's worth.:)

Maybe you sdhold consider making the tornado room double as the insrumtent storage room! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Actually, that's what I did. There's just enough room left for two adults, a baby and a dog.

Yeah, but would you grab it?
Yeah, I guess I would. It'd be a shame for it to go up in flames after surviving for 91 years.
That and my '47 Gibson 7-string steel guitar.

Ah, but you only get to pick one!

My stuff is all insured and none of it is really irreplaceable. I'd probably take the Collings MF-5 as it's the most valuable.

I'd grab the Guild D-40 (gift from my grandmother, so sentimental value) 1st...probably the Kentucky next, though my Mandobird's still new and exciting, so I might flip flop on that one. Clearly, it's time for an upgrade!

Grab the one that's closest! #I would have a hard time deciding between my Lebeda or my old Gibson A and wouldn't want to waste time debating.....and then there's my husband's Collings and whiteface Gibson A3 to think about....

True story, just a little over a month ago: I grabbed the dog, my purse and my Franklin Planner and bolted.

Our condo was going through some major repairs, so my husband and I were living back and forth between home and a nearby hotel. #Of course we took his Collings and my Lebeda along to the hotel, but he also insisted we take the two old Gibsons.

Good thing.

http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

My husband and the four mandolins were safe at the hotel when the fire started. #I was home with the dog...grabbed the dog, put him in the car and moved the car down the block, hoping to go back for a guitar or two.

There's no time to go back in, of course.

Just a reminder to check your insurance policy! They cover the apartment we're living in while we wait for repairs.

Probably my 1922 Fairbanks-Vega (Tu-ba-phone tone ring) 5-string banjo with 2007 Wyatt Fawley neck, then . . .
my 1992 Flatiron F5 Artist mandolin, then . . .
my 1999 Weber Beartooth mandolin. Oops, I forgot Mrs. B; better get her first.

First pass: my wife will grab our boy Aidan, and I will grab our dog Jack (the latter is a little harder to carry when a house is burning down around you ;)

Second pass, time (and safety) permitting: I would go back in for our external harddrive (with backups of photos, music, notation, and Quicken), my wife's favorite jewelry box, and my Arches (or future favorite mandolin of the moment).

Third pass: the Steinway

Well that would be easy.

I would grab my wife and child and get out of the house as fast as we could..... ........then I would grab a couple of cases of Shiner Bach.... then the BBQ sauce..........then the brisquet, hambergers, hot dogs, steaks and have a big huge BBQ and invite the all of the neighbors, family and friends.....

Hey it's Texas.........what do you expect? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I'd grab the 1983 Ken Ratcliff then the Martin D-35 then put the Gibson A2 under my arm and still have one arm available to open the door. LOL. Wife can pull her own weight. LOL.

Yeah, well, here's what I'd grab...

I finally bit the bullet and bought a policy from Heritage for the instruments. There's "irreplaceable," and then there's REALLY irreplaceable.

Honestly, I,d have to get Poco the Taco Bell dog and let the mandolin burn. Serious factoid; there is no "thing" that is valuable enough for a citizen to go into a burning building for. Leave it for your local smoke eaters.

JEStanek
Jul-12-2008, 7:53am
MSnyder's right. New construction, espescially with vinyl siding, homewraps, syntheic carpets, all make the smoke of a burning home today much more toxic that the smoke of 20+ years ago.

Firemarshall Bob moment, over!

I'd grab my Flatiron A5-1 and my Taylor 914-C. I'd let the kids run, that is if I actually thought they were home - my how they grow!

I would not go into a burning building (unless my wife needed help or the kids were actually home).

OP here ...

not that you(se) would be carrying one around in your wallet, or anything, but what i had in mind was portraits of your favorite mandolin ... ol' faithful ... the one with smoothed-out recesses between the frets ... enough DNA burnished into the soundboard to make a positive ID ... "rosebud" ...

I think I'd have to say that a Loar would probably be enough for me to go back into a burning house (of course, depending on the nature of the fire which has not been specified yet). Even if it wasn't my Loar...

After I make sure the wife, kids, cat and dog are out of the house, I'd grab our 2 computers (laptops), the 3 closest mandolins, a bottle of wine and a bottle of whiskey. The rest, as they say, can burn...
