Nylon Strings, fretless. #Probably doesn't sound much like a mando but looks like good fun. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Perhaps this should be part of the recent felt pick discussion http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I have a Thornburg (recent) gourd-bodied "plantation" banjo. Not quite sure how the gourd mandolin would sound. I suppose that you could use nearly anything as a reflective back-and-sides enclosure. What tuning you'd put the eight nylon strings in is the question.

In India they cultivate special pumpkins for their acoustic qualities to be used specifically to make sitars and tambouras. They are strung with dozens of heavy wire strings.
