I just bought the following 1909 three point Gibson F2 on E-Bay:

I was the only bidder which makes me nervous. #But if everything is legit, it seems like an okay deal.

Oh knowledgeable ones - how dumb was I?

Well, the guys feedback shows that he is a buyer most of the time and not a seller. Ask for a telephone number so you can call him. If he's legit he'll give you one.

Lovely instrument, if it's as pictured. Can't comment on the price, but with the increasing interest in Gibson F-2's and F-4's, could be reasonable enough. Not too surprising that there weren't many bidders; $4.8K ain't chicken feed, this isn't a mandolin that will draw bluegrassers like flies, and many prospective bidders -- like yourself -- have seen enough scams to be a bit wary and suspicious.

Keep us posted after you try to contact the seller. If everythings's up and up, I predict you'll really enjoy your 3-point. I've had nearly 20 years of fun with mine.

Allen's analysis is sound. I've exchanged messages with the seller several times when he's been interested in something I've had up for sale, and I didn't detect any cause for worry.

I love those old 3 points. They look cool and can sound very nice. But, I have found they're not real popular with players and buyers. Nearly $5000 does sound a bit high to me, perhaps that is why you were the only bidder. Let us know how it is once you get it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It's from my favorite period at Gibson for oval-holes next to the Loar period.. the raised pickguard on a 3pt came out around 1908/1909. They also have the "modern" setup without the forward pitch to the neck angle. Esoteric though they are, they are rare and wonderful, and finding one in good shape like that could have taken you years of trying.

You probably did pay a little over "market", but I wouldn't be too worried about the price. They are certainly more rare than loar period truss rod f models, to put it into perspective. I was hunting for mine for at least 5 years before the right one came up and I was lucky enough to get hold of it!

I think they have a much more elegant and anachronistic look than the 2point fs.. the quality level is right up there with the gold standard later gibsons, and they really are just a hoot to look at!
