Hey there, I was just looking around at some pics of mandolins and they all see so squeaky clean, shiny and flawless. Then I looked at my mandolin, and well, its starting to get that oh so coveted distressed look to it. And I love it. Its got a lot of scratches, a couple little dents and plenty of gods honest play wear. So lets see some pics of some honest distressing and battle scars that people's mandolins have accumulated. Pic marks, fret divits, dents, neck wear, gastly gashes and the rest... I'm sure that bill would approve.

I've got a couple I'll try to send. The first--a bit difficult to see--is the back wear and crazing. The instrument is a Brentrup 23V Maestro--prototype built in 2004; red spruce top, hard maple one-piece back.

Lots and lots of honest wear on this baby http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

A little known, but true fact: Whistlepigs actually CHEW on wood. I guess you knew that, eh, Fred? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I had a chance to play Fred's Brentrup at the recent MBOTMA festival. Despite the distressing, it's still a killer mandolin.

No fireplace poker was harmed in the making of this mandolin.

Yes sir. I wonder if Gibson has a poker hidden away in their Distressing Department? Maybe Stew-Mac sells them. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

My well worn 1999 F-5G. #That mandolin was mint when I bought it in 99. #It has many, many hours of playing time.

I've been away from the Cafe and have only played very intermittently in the last few years (birthing/raising two babes in 19 months keeps a mama pretty busy!) But I'm playing a lot more now and visiting here more often and I couldn't resist posting a pic of my little distressing expert, LOL http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y199/saznpins/IMG_1345.jpg
He tries very hard to play just like mama and does a fabulous job considering he doesn't even turn 3 until next month http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif I have a little Sweet Pea that I give to him whenever I play the Flatty but for some reason he always wants whatever mama is playing http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif He's only put a very teeny scratch on it to be honest, most of the wear is from the original owner.
Cheers much,
Sarah

Another cafe member sent me this pic. of Adam Steffey, taken at a concert that he attended. OK,it's not my Mandolin, but Adam's Daley looks to be getting a lot of wear & i don't think he's had it that long. It seems as though Adam Steffey's pinky & right hand ring finger are doing the damage,

... i'm with you - whenever i detect a blemish of any sort on my mandolin(s) i start buffing way like crazy. i'm sure i increase its inside temperature considerably with the friction.

i even put the pick-guard back on because i couldn't stand to see the little empty screw holes.

how thick is a thick coat of nitrocellulose lacquer ... ?

You may be right Wes,but a trawl through Sim Daley's site doesn't reveal an option for a distressed Mandolin & the mandolin that Adam Steffey is holding in the pic.on there,if it's his own, is not distressed,

Didn't I read somewhere about Sim doing a Sam Bush copy? I think it was for Adam and included a distressed look. I could just as easily be WAY wrong!

Kevin K

If you go to Sim's site,on the home page, he has a link to Adam's distressed Daley.
The way I understand, Sim built this for himself and Adam had to have it after playing it.

D Sears

It is the Adam Steffy Daley Distressed Classic. Adam has not had it that long to have have that amount of true distressing from playing. #If that were true playing distressing, then Daley mandolins have a major chemistry flaw in the finish formula. #http://www.simdaley.com/photos/AdamsNewMando/adams_new_mando.html

Adam's Gilchrist mandolin that he played for several years had no playing wear like that, his Gibson Signature model did not, and his Apitius did not as well.

That Daley is made to look that way.

I'm just going by getting to see it up close and what Adam told me about it. He said Sim had made it for himself, but after he played it he just had to have it and talked Sim into selling it to him.

I have a mandolin that's going through some natural distressing, and even though it gets, "whipped like a mule" from time to time, I can't see it getting as distressed as some of the new distressed models I see. Man, those things are so distressed, there should be a new term for them. Any ideas?

D Sears

I used to work at Gibson OAI, mandolin division (actually building them), and I have played mandolin for most of my life, even professionally, and Adam's Daley mandolin is not naturally distressed. Heck, Sam Bush's old Gibson is not as distressed as the Steffey one, and we all know that Sams old mandolin has seen many years of hard playing.

yeah, but doesn't coyote ugly mean you would rather chew your arm of than disturb the mandolin if you fell asleep with it in your arms? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif or is that wolverine ugly, I guess I get them mixed up!

Thanks for the info.re.Adam Steffey's 'distressed' Mandolin. That goes a long way to explaining why a realtively 'young' Mandolin looks so err, distressed !.
I just had another look at Sim Daley's web site & found the ref.to Adam's 'distressed' Mandolin that Kevin K refers to.Looks like i missed the obvious - no change there then !!
