Just sat on front row of a set last Saturday at Silver Dollar City with GRASSTOWNE.

Alan Bibey was great. This is the first time I saw him and the group. I have seen Steve Gulley before with others.

Great Show!!!!!!!

Yeah, Alan is one amazing player. Was he playing his Loar?

Nick Alberty

No.....He was playing his signature model. I was hoping He'd have the Loar. It would have been my first to see.

I talked to someone last month that played Alan's Loar and said it was a "dud". Not like other Loars. This person is a picker, too. # He has a great Randy Wood mando. I guess just being a Loar doesn't make it great.

I played it a couple of years ago and I thought it was pretty good I guess. I wasnt blown away but it still had that 80 year old wood tone.

There are many non-Loar owners who tend to think all Loars are duds. Could be cause they know they'll never own one.
I've played Alan's many times and it's no dud. His many recordings using it should satisfy even the non-belivers as to it's power and mite. The absolute worst Loar I've ever played was pretty darn good. I would suspect if Alan had to fly to this gig he didn't want to take the Loar on a plane. Losing a signature model could be replaced.

Alan's loar is a great mandolin. Someone doesn't know what they are talking about.

A Loar may be a Loar, but Alan Bibey is Alan Bibey.

He will sound great on whatever instrument is in his hands.

It's the notes, guys. And Alan not only knows where the good ones are on any mandolin, he plays them with terrific articulation and clarity. Perhaps a better way to put this is
"real clean".

I look forward to hearing him in person again. He seems to be getting better all the time.

What Don said. He's also one of the nicest humans you'll ever meet.

Alan's Loar is a good Loar with our without Alan playing it. I've played it a number of times and heard numerous others on it, and it will hold its own. Everyone has their personal favorite for what they consider the "Best" Loar ever, but still, there are many many other great Loars and Alan's will hold its own with any of them. And, you are right. He is one extremely nice guy and a joy to know!

I'd be willing to get in a "Loar-off" with "someone" and see him call mine a dud.

Albert Whiting
May-27-2008, 8:19pm
Oh yeah, whose "Loar" is bigger?

Anyway, Alan could play a shoebox with rubberbands on it and it would sound awesome. Alan is such a great guy and an incredible mandolin player and deserves every bit of success he gets. Ya know it must be a mandolin player thing but all the greats are super nice guys. Chris Thile, Adam Steffey, Alan Bibey, Wayne Benson are the guys I have met and hung out some with and they are wonderful people.

If everyone would play mandolin there would be peace in the world unless they started talking about whether Thile was bluegrass or Monroe was the greatest.

Steff will play anything he is asked to. I've got photos of him playing Ferns, Loars, Nuggets, etc. If you want to hear your mando played by a pro on stage to see what it will do at it's max. just ask Steff to try it on.

Hi you guys! Thanks for welcoming #me MandoPete! #
Nick, I was playing my old mandolin the day you were at the show at Silver Dollar City. #I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to chat. #I'd have been more than happy to show you both mandolins I had with me that week.
I know everyone has a different idea of what they think sounds a particular way and that's really great and what makes us all different and interesting. #I don't have any misconceptions of my mandolin being the best sounding ax on earth BUT I dig it and it's tone. #Some people may not and that's cool too. #I'm just so happy to be a part of the mandolin community and really appreciate all you guys and your opinions! #I mean that sincerely.
Mr Don S., #you're too nice and forgiving in your assessments BUT I really appreciate it and admire you and your playing immensely. #Thanks my friend and I hope to see and hear you again very soon!
Thanks all you mando cats!

It was the album The Young Mando Monsters that first got me to switch over from the six string...So thanks for that!

Alan is able to experience something only a few hundred mandolin pickers can experience. He was a 20's Fern picker before become a Loar picker. He knows the difference. While the price of a Loar seems to be way beyond the average picker's reach the experience of owning one is priceless. I can think of many pros that went over to the Loar experience in the past 5 years and none have regreted it. It seems the ones who think Loars aren't all they are cracked up to be don't have one.

Saw AB this weekend at Graves Mountain and was blown away. I made it a point to be there for both of Grasstowne's excellent sets and I'll be headin' over to ITunes a bit later to pony up. There were a few elements to the day that just really stood out head-and-shoulders: Alan's playing was just jaw-droppingly good, but y'all already know that, not sure that i heard another mando picker all day with quite the clarity and tone, Kenny Ingram… exactly as advertised, Cia's voice is right up there w/ Alison and Patty Loveless, does anyone seem to have as much fun playing this music as RV and the Rage? Other than maybe Cherryholmes, those two bands just have an energy about them even w/ spotty Sound issues, just a ton-of-fun to watch

Thanks for all the comments guys!
The Young Mando Monsters project has been a while back now but so glad it inspired you in any way Jonathan! I'm afraid it may be under another name at this point like "not nearly so Young(old) Mando Monsters" or worse~!!
The Graves Festival was awesome as usual. Great place to play!
I hope to meet some of you mandocats sometime so be sure to say howdy if we're in the same location!!
Thanks again!

It seems the ones who think Loars aren't all they are cracked up to be don't have one.
Of course not everyone can own a Loar but the above quote simply states the obvious. Obviously, if a person does not think highly of a loar they are less likely to own one. Makes perfect sense to me.

Just curious....what is it that you can compare a Loar too...are they being compared to other Loars, modern instruments, Ferns...?

Personally, I prefer the tone of an old instrument. If there was one 80 years +/- with 'ff' holes...I'd buy it whether it was dog, cat, bug, dud, bud, crud or what have you.

I've never played a bad instrument, just ones that had more qualities that I personally like in a mandolin than others.

Hey Alan, what I really liked about the YMM's was the diverse styles of the players and their approach to the mandolin. It really showed me how versatile an instrument it can be.

Alan's Loar is awesome, He is a super guy and to call a Loar a dud you should own a Stud Loar or http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
