Here (http://harrisonburg.craigslist.org/msg/667701055.html) is a Style A for $5K.

Is something weird going on with the binding in this photo? Looks like it might be cracked, or separating.

I think it's just a funny angle.

What bothers me more is that the photos are from frets.com (http://frets.com/FRETSPages/Museum/Mandolin/LyonHealy/LHA/lha.html)

It's not uncommon for Frank to photograph anything cool that comes through Gryphon, so the fact that Frank took the pictures doesn't really tell you more than a good question to ask the seller http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I think you're seeing the edge of the black binding; it's not a separation. BTW, the binding is not one thickness; it has an expanding taper toward the neck.

Yipe. Nice catch.

The string holding it up was the giveaway. Classic Frank.

The seller's description is completely different from the one on frets. I would understand the seller wanting to use Frank's high-quality images of their instrument (even though they're 8 years old), but they would have been wise to give him credit since ripping off images from frets, elderly, or ebay is a pretty well known scam.

Well, I asked the seller about the photos ... no response yet ...

Seller sent me some photos of the mandolin he's REALLY selling. Nice condition. Has a birdseye back. Still a bit pricey for my blood.

Maybe I should ask him to take off $500 for the missing string.

He sent me three photos of the mandolin as well with the following explanation of why he used the photos from Mr. Ford's site.

I had the instrument appraised 2 or 3 years ago. I had taken pictures of it, but could not find them. When I decided to post the ad on craigs list, I used the pictures from the website instead of my own."

Take his explanation for what you want. May be fact or he may have go online and found some photos of another instrument.

Ask for a picture of the mandolin with todays newspaper showing the date in the photo as well, or better just request a picture of him holding it upside down in his hands. If he actually has the mandolin that will be no problem. The seller should expect a few hard questions after initially using someone elses photos - thats a classic scam as mentioned in a post above.
