Hi, I'm a newbie to the forum. Have been lurking for some years but thought I should get involved. So thought I would send in a couple of pictures of "Wylie" made by John in 1992. Wylie due to the coyotes face in the quilt pattern on the back. Wylie has gone through quite a few hands in hi life before I obtained it. I also own a '83 Flatiron A5-1 signed by Steve Carlson, and a wonderful '52 Martin D-18. The rockies name is for where I live, in the Canadian rockies, about 20 minutes From Jamie Wiens who makes the wonderful mandolins.

Nice! Is the neck finish worn thin by player wear, or was it made that way? Thats some nice maple going on there.

That's a beauty made by a great builder and you've got an excellent guy living close by in case it ever needs work. Doesn't get much better than that. Welcome to the Café.

John made that mandolin for me....
If you got it from me, it only went through one set of hands... # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Are we sure it's a '92?
Because John was a latecomer to Red Spruce, and this was the first Red Spruce topped mandolin he ever built....

But it could be my memory's going....
Wouldn't be the first time.... # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Bruce, I answered as well on my goofed new topic with the front picture. I didn't know that Wylie was made for you. Yes John told me it was his first red spruce and quilted mandolin. Talked and emailed John quite a bit as I was making myself an electric mando, he was very sharing and very nice. But I also know that David Mosher had it for awhile ?? Was it on loan or did you get it back from him? before I obtained it ?
And Jamie, yes I have had Jamie Wiens do the frets once, but he no longer does repairs (too busy building) so I do my own. Jamie used Wylie as his example and idea mando until he got into the Loar copies so heavily. Haven't been down to see the latest batch but did see Jamie at a jam back a month ago or so.

Hi Dave....
I might have loaned David the mandolin for a bit...
Foggy memory....
But John built the mando for me, and ordering it was my way of encouraging him to try Red Spruce, which then became his favorite topwood....
Is there a date in it? #
1992?

By the way, the RCA 44Bx is working fine, and is one of my favorite mics.... #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Interesting...

I started cutting Red Spruce in '90, and it felt like years and years before I could get John to try the stuff....

Guess it was only months and months.... # http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
