With the permission of my guitar teacher, I present you with the "John Cephas" mandolin. Anybody want to guess the builder? Here's a hint, some guy in Virginia.

I believe I've seen the headstock inlay in the past. It's on the tip of my tongue but I just can't come up with it now. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Mouth of Wilson - bing, bing! Loves pies - bing, bing, bing!!

My teacher also has a guitar (not that he's lending that) from the same builder with "John Cephas" on the fretboard.

And, yes it is the same guy as Cephas and Wiggins. As my mandolins gather dust, I'm learning the blues and a few spirituals too!

By the way, this is a great mandolin. Much louder and more percussive than my 1920 A3. Just needs some setup as John had the strings real low. I just today jacked up the bridge and braided a new strap for it. By the way, this is mandolin #61 from the Mouth-of-Wilson pie eater.

that's one fine looking mando, f-d. do have any recommendations on where to hear some of Mr. Cephas' mandolin playing (or what albums to buy?)

I know what you mean about mandolins gathering dust; mine haven't been receiving as much attention since I got my D-18 (http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/wesb4217/18_front.jpg)

I don't think you're going to here John playing the mandolin in public or on a recording - I'd be shocked! This mandolin is not seeing much use, but means alot to John. I just hated to see it with all those corroded strings and unplayable action. Maybe John will work on a few practice routines from Delgrassi (sp). Isn't he the blues mandolin player?

If you want to get some great Cephas recordings, I'd recommend "Guitar Man" or "Somebody Told the Truth". They're all good though. . . He's a heck of a fingerpicker and I have alot to learn!

You know I forgot to finish this thread - it's a Henderson mandolin. I took it to a local jam and had a great time!
