Just booked#in to the camp and booked my flight. Jazzed to get there. What can a first timer expect to find at a camp like this?

Mike, you'll get a schedule of classes and such to pick from for each time block. At this one they divide the classes into beginner, intermediate and advanced. At times and depending on who's instructing there may not be that much difference in the levels. Pick the topics your interested in and go for it. You'll come away with something from all the classes.

Wish I were able to attend this year - A new mando and a new baby is enough for one year ( so I have been told http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ).

Really hoping to attend next year - Less than a 2 hr drive - really no excuses next year.

Looking forward to hear all the impressions and see the pics!

Thought I would give this a bump since it is coming up soon. Happened to be in the Rosine area last weekend and stopped by the Old Homeplace. Really a neat place. Glad they fixed it up nice. Rosine really is a small place. Visited Bill's grave as well. Hope to make some new friends.

Two months and counting! I get the best connections from Edmonton by leaving Edmonton on the Wednesday and arriving in Louisville that evening. Thought that I'd see Louisville on Thursday and head for Owensboro on Friday. Anybody going through L'ville on Friday? (Hint, hint). I know it's gonna be great!

Jealous, very jealous. However, I'll be in very good company travelling down Route 66 with a bunch of friends and remembering to toast Mr Monroe on his birthday.

Have a great time and hopefully I'll get there one year.

...well I am going to try my best and make it this year!

Will be traveling from the Atlanta, Ga area. Does anyone in / near the Atlanta, Ga area have an interest in carpooling? We cold split some expenses / drive time and listen to some good old (Monroe) Bluegrass along the way! I have a Nissan Armada with plenty of space to stretch out for the ride.

Please email me off line if you have an interest at: mandopluker@gmail.com

Thanks,

Shayne, I came up short on the tuition this year or you could pick me up in SC on your way through. I'll definitely be going next year. Looks like my kind of fun.

I went in 2006 -- I believe it was the first year... #

Totally enjoyed it and learned a lot. #The instructors were all really good - Compton, David Long, Red and Chris Henry, and Skip Gorman. #They all knew their stuff and did a good job teaching it. #The camp ran from about noon on Friday, Saturday all day, concert Saturday night, and Sunday about half a day. # Also lots of after hours jamming. #I had a cold and wasn't up to doing the late night / early morning jamming but there was plenty going on. #Good eats too. #

Don't feel like you've got to learn it all on the spot. #I was a little frustrated that I didn't get everything immediately - but more sunk in than I initially thought.

Study up on your Monroe instrumentals - stuff from Master of Bluegrass and later. #Also some of the older instrumental classics.

Sounds like they've added a trip to Rosine which they didn't have when I went. #That'll be cool.

The folks with the museum bend over backwards to make sure you have a good time.

Would love to go back some time. #I highly recommend it.

Couple of cajuns from S. Louisiana heading up there too. Can bring boudin & cracklins upon request! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif Only if we have room after loading all the instruments though...:p

I'm a little disappointed in the $500 registration fee. Kaufman's Kamp is only $750 per week for a bed, three square meals per day, nightly concerts, and four hours of lessons everyday. I'd consider the Monroe Camp at $350 or so, but I reckon I'm spoiled from the Kaufman Kamp. I'd love to take some workshops with Compton. I'm still thinking about going, though.

I didn't think 500 was to bad since it included hotel, some of the meals and the feild trip with dinner to Rosine. I think the small enrollment size may have something to do with it. 50 students max. More time for individual help.

Had a hoot last year. Frank Wakefield cracks me up and he is completely approachable. I saw where Roland White is stepping in for Mike Compton on Sat. and Sun. He is also a wonderful teacher. However, Frank is just about worth the price of admission by himself. I'm going to be there. Looking forward to knocking back some beverages with Brady in the hotel lobby. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Looking forward to it http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I haven't been banned from there yet I don't think, so it's all good.

Bobby Osbourne is awesome, but is he really a Monroe-style player? Man, he had a style all his own! They should have called this "Bluegrass Mandolin" camp instead.

Also why isn't Skip Gorman on the faculty? IMHO Mike Compton and he are the best Monroe-style players on the planet. Not disrespect intended here - every instructor at the camp is a GREAT player!

I went the first year and it was an incredible experience! Also, the $500 fee is incredibly reasonable for the instruction and accommodations. The tuition monies also support the International Bluegrass Music Museum.
