View Full Version : Mop buttons for grover tuners?

My new Fern came with Grover tuners, and I'm happy with the mechanics of the tuners, but would like to upgrade the plastic buttons to something with a better feel. I thought some MOP buttons would be nice, but I haven't been able to find anything that's compatible with Grovers. Any ideas?

Perhaps I should just put the Waverly tuners on and be done with it? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Just remember that installing Waverlys is a whole 'nother can of worms... an expensive proposition to be sure.

There are some threads about this somewhere but I don't have the time right now to dig them out. The answer was to file down the posts of the Grovers. They now have two flats. You have to file them down square so that you could use the Waverly buttons (If I recall). The Waverly's have square shafts.

Then again I could be totally out of my mind and dreamed all this up after eating some bad pepperoni on a pizza.

You know, I just looked at the installation instructions at Stew-Mac and installing Waverly's is not a job for those with a weak stomach. While they're beautiful machines, I don't think I'll be drilling into my new mando any time soon.

Mike, thanks for the info. I did some searches on the cafe and google, but didn't come up with any results.

This whole thing sounds a bit too involved for me at the moment, so I think I'll stick with the stock buttons for now.

Thanks again!

Here are two threads where it's mentioned. It isn't a How to but it is described.

Grover has a site somewhere buried; I believe they offer MOP buttons on it, at a very high price per.

Evan, thanks for the lead. I'll do some spelunking and see if I can find their site.

Function over form. My Fern came equipped with pearl button Shallers. Looks beautiful, but they are clearly inferior to the Grovers being provided now. I have decided to make do with them as they work ok and are original, but it is the ONLY thing I dislike about my Fern.

PS $500 for Waverly's is a large percentage of the Vintage A that you are holding a place for! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Thanks for digging the link to the Grover site. I did some poking around and couldn't find MOP buttons, but I can always give them a call.

Tenor - you're absolutely right. I'll forgo the Waverly's and put some of that dough in the "Vintage A" pot. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif The rest will go toward the integrated tailpiece/armrest and the tonegard.

F style Gold plated metal from Schaller have what appear to be a MOP [oyster shell]
faces on either side and molded into the plastic for the mechanical connection to the shaft.
done quite seamlessly precise , and as I recall before the last exchange rate adjustment were only about $125 a set.
J.Lebeda fitted them on my Mando with the straphanger.

As far as buttons to plug onto the grovers , probably the Stew Mac super glue route is the path, looking at the site,Grover supplys guitar tuner alternate buttons , guess they don't follow the chatter from button switching OC players,on this website.

I had the armrest and went back to the stock tail piece. I liked the sound better (really subjective), the look and it is more convienent for me to string the stock tailpiece intead of the armrest one. In just a short time I was adjusted to the feel. If you must have am armrest, the Weber one is very slick and doesn't have those scary turnbuckles.
