And while we're on the topic, I have Martin bowlback #2263, which would date to around 1907 according to the Mugwumps site. It's quite plain, with only 9 ribs and a simple, undecorated tortoise-celluloid pickguard. Markers only at frets 5, 7, and 10 (no 12th fret marker!) It's rather scratched up but sounds nice.

What model d'you suppose it is, with only 9 ribs?

Style 00 was the only one with 9 ribs in 1907. The Style 000 came around in 1909.

The first time I saw one of those I assumed someone had put the Martin name on a cheaper bowlback. I was amazed when I saw the documentation.

My 00 is #2086, just a tad older than Mr. M's. Also 9 ribs. I was amazed when I strung it up and heard it. That much sound out of their student model.
