I recently joined the Cafe and have posted a few opinions? #I have never posted pictures and am not really sure how? #I just got my new Weber Diamondback Distressed from Dennis at The Mandolin Store. #WOW, what a great mandolin and what a great guy to do business with, again! #I know there has been some discussion about the "distressed look", both pro and con? #I personally had no real opinion either way, until now? #I absolutely love this mandolin. #First and foremost it has "killer sound" and should only improve; #hard to believe it can get any better? #The look is fantastic as well; #nicely done, not extreme like others I have seen? #Of course the mandolin overall has the excellent materials and workmanship Weber is noted for. #Check these mandos out at The Mandolin Store; #you can't go wrong either way. #Photos to follow, if I can figure it out? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Is that the diamond back that he's had for sale? I've had my eye on that baby. It looks like that one's still on his site?

johnM, no he still has the one listed on the web sight and I believe he has another one on the way? The one on the web sight has a shaped case (mine is oblong), more stuff and more distressing? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

I've had mine since July,It was #2 before they were called the Diamondback.Have had no desire for another mandolin since and believe me that is unusual. It sounds as old as it looks.dry, loud, plays like a dream,a true banjo killer.I asked Dennis if they were consistently sounding as mine and he said yes.

It looks like the Diamondback is a special distressed Fern, just for TMS? Looks just like a Fern, except for the distressedness.

The oblong Weber model; very nice fit and lots of room inside for stuff? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Oblong? I thought it was referred to as rectangle. The same as the Ferns come in. Super protective case but a little over kill for me. I have the shaped Weber case for everyday use for my Fern.

I am a fan of "self distressing" but that is one sweeeeet looking mandolin!!!!! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

As to the comparison w/a Fern-The exact same appointments except the binding is solid.A Fern would be b/w.

Now that you have had it for a little while.

What do you like most about it?

and what if anything bugs you about it?

northfolk,

# # I have been admiring the "Fern" and the "Diamondback Distressed"at The Mandolin Store for some time now. Sadly, there are no Weber Dealers in my part of the world and I ultimately decided on a Gibson - Fern. Seeing your Diamondback makes me ponder if I made a right choice. Yours is a real BEAUTY. Congrats and Happy Playing.

Keep the Faith

I cannot find anything negative to say about this mando; I like everything about it. In fact I find myself playing it almost all of the time. I do still occasionally play my Gibson A3; different sound and feel, but old Gibsons are just cool? This Weber might just be the one; no more MAS? It fulfills all of my needs, for now anyway. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Though i wasn't asked, will agree with northfolk.I just realised that Sierra Hull is playing one,she had it at IBMA i'm told, and you can hear it on her new album, and in the you tube clip that is out.I was never really a Weber fan,but I really liked the early Flatirons.Thats the sound I was looking for, loud but not brash and it stays strong all the way up the neck.I know this is post a picture section so will refrain from any more comments until I can post a pic

Sierra has a distressed Fern that I brought to IBMA last October.

Actually, Sierra was talking up her new Weber Distressed model at the Mando Mania gig at Merlefest last weekend. Said it was the best mandolin she's played/owned and it sounded really really good in her very capable hands...

I'm stunned by the sound from my newly acquired Weber Diamondback Distressed. I do wish they hadn't gone quite so far with the distressing below the fretboard but it really is an excellent sounding Mando and it's tone and volume raises eyebrows. I wonder how it will sound once played in ;)

Sierra is just insanely talented. Makes me feel like the only thing my "non-distressed" Fern is good for is paddleing my canoe!! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Yep, Sierra is something else as is Rebecca Lovell. Probably doesn't hurt to be classically trained in violin from age 5 (as in Rebecca's case) but you have to give these youngsters their due. At the Mando Mania event at Merlefest, guys like Tim O'Brien, Sam Bush and Mike Compton would just shake their heads in disbelief during the girls' solos. #

Having said that, there is something truly wonderful about a soulful and slow interpretation of the music vs. blistering fast solos that all the kids seem to favor these days. Blame it on Thile, I guess...

Sorry to get off topic here. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Shad, I will second that! I too get many looks and comments on my Distressed Diamondback's sound; it seems to get better everytime I play it? It absolutely holds it's own and then some in any jam. Banjos Beware! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Weber,Weber,Weber,Web......... - I'm really NOT biased in any way shape or form,i just think that they are awesome Mandolins & i don't care if Rick DOES send me a free 'distressed' model at all. Seriously, other than one or two top makers,i'd be hard put to depart from my Webber addiction if i wished to buy another Mandolin. I am VERY lucky to own 2 superb Mandolins by this maker & anyone wanting to buy a top quality instrument should at least check the Webers out,
#If anyone wants a 'Banjo Killer',try out a Weber 'Beartooth' if you can get hold of one. I risk structural damage to my home when i chop on mine - incredible power, with no loss of tone.

Thanks Rick B. last week I looked for 2 days trying to figure out which weber Sierra was using and it was right here under my nose. For a long time I have been looking for the right Bruce Weber signed Gibby F5L or F5V, I'm going to check out a Big Sky sometime next week. A 96 F5V signed by weber has been the best sounding mando I've come across bar none.

OOOOOHHHMMMMMM.....I am one with Weber!

Distressed or not, we are all ONE under the mandolin maker on high...the Almighty Bruce. (wasn't that a movie?)

Sierra recently Accquired a gibson master model. Before that she played a Weber Distressed for almost a year and a half. before that she had a gibson adam steffey. Be for that she had a 90's flatiron. I don't know what she had before she was 9 years old:grin:

Thank you for answering that.....I've been wondering and wanting to know how many mando's she has and plays and which she likes the best. If I had to guess I think she is a gibson girl at heart and loves her Havery signed master model. But if weber were giving me mando's to play I'd love them to and certainly play and talk them up! They are great mandolins no doubt! And their distressed is a real beauty to my eyes!

Oh and Sierra also now has a Lafferty. Stumbled across her playing it on a YouTube video.
