What is the difference between An ivory nut and a mother of pearl nut? Any body have any thoughts?

Mother of pearl is pretty fragile, Might be hard to find a piece thick enough. The sale of new Ivory is illegal, but old pieces that are documented are legal to sell. I have seen graphite and bone used for nuts. I seen a link for a new product that is bone that has been tempered, sounds like a good product.

Fossil Ivory is also a contender.

I got a pearl nut blank from StewMac and had my tech. shape it and fit it to my MK, my tech. guy told me however that it might crack during the process, luckly it didn't and it has been on the MK for over a year.

I think a pearl nut will tend to give th e mando a brighter sound. Which may or may not be a good thing...depending on the instrument and your tastes...

I bought some, and have not carved any of it yet. It looks promising. Even being some ten thousand plus years old - it is pretty good stuff.
