Hey folks,

I'm living in Rio de Janeiro right now studying choro, and I wanted to send news of the latest incredible young bandolim player that will make all your heads spin.

His name is Luis Barcelos, he's about 21 years old, and he seems to be everyone's first call for bandolim in Rio right now - I swear he's at nearly every choro gig I go to.

Anyhow, killer improviser, interpreter, etc... see for yourself:

Thanks for the tip! Always nice to hear from somone on the scene. We'll keep our eyes out for Luis when we're down there next month.

He plays every Tuesday night at Trapiche Gamboa (http://www.trapichegamboa.com.br), easily the best regular roda de choro in the city. The rest of the regular group there includes Eduardo Neves (sax & flute), Caio Marcio (6-string guitar, from Tira Poeira), Rogerio Caetano (easily the best 7-string player in town), Jaymi Vignoli (cavaquinho, from the group Agua de Moringa), Rui Alvim (clarinet, also from Agua de Moringa), and Anderson do Pandeiro.

If anyone is headed to Rio and wants tips on where to see some great music, just ask, I'm happy to help.

Hey Jesse,

I'm still in the process of putting two and two together, and have finally figured out who you are. Our paths would certainly have crossed in the past couple of months if you hadn't taken off to Rio. I've just started circulating among the choro players in the Berkeley area, and so am certain to have encountered you at one of the local gatherings.

At any rate, I just met a guy from LA named Kip, who you apparently know and have seen in Rio in the not-too-distant past. Totally unsolicited, only two days before you mentioned it here, he also said that Trapiche Gamboa is an essential watering hole.

There's a group of us headed down your way for a week in May, arriving on May 18. Mike Marshall is leading it, and it's choro-themed. The only downside to it is that it's only for a week, but I, for one, am grateful even for that.

We'll have to see if a rendezvous is in the cards. Sounds like it's reasonably likely that we'll happen to bump into you on Tuesday night at what looks like an inevitable location!

Thanks again for the tip!
