Dang, I didn't capitalize Hester in the subject and I can't change it! Sorry!

I've noticed that capital letters after the first one are ignored and show up as lower case. I doubt you did anything wrong. Thanks for the link, too.

You probably did. That was done by the forum software.

Great article! The only thing that was weird was that picture of the man I assume to be the interviewer right next to Gail's name...

So few women luthiers out there... glad there's at least one for me to look up to!

Don't Forget Stephanie Reiser or Laura Ratcliff... I also thought that was an odd picture of Gail there too, Karen! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

That wierd picture is our own jomando. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

He's a great luthier himself, and the picture is actually not only next to Gail's name, but next to his byline!

Yes, of course I neglected to mention the other women I know about. #My VERY bad!
While I don't know Gail or Laura, Stephanie in particular has been very supportive/encouraging of me.

And I did see the byline... it just took me a minute to figure out what went with what...

At least easier than a 3 year old 100 storey house http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

But seriously, I second this "if others can do it, I can" approach. When we bought our house, there was a stone plate on the outer wall with a single number: "1756".

But I didn't do everything myself in that case, admittedly.

Great article. I also concur with that 'do it yourself' approach. My father has always had a complete shop - lathe, mill, etc. He made his living in camera repair, but also is into gunsmithing and a host of other things. In our house, you just naturally tried to do it yourself. Any success (luck) I ever have in building instruments I credit directly to him. It's a mindset you grow up with, and that you take for granted until you get out into the world and find out that not everybody else shares it.

I have a similar, though funny experience with my dad. When we were young and would see something we wanted, my dad would always say "I could make one better than that, why would I buy it?" Of course he often did NOT make one, so it became our family joke, "yeah, dad can make one better than that!" Anyway, usually after significant whining or teasing, he would sometimes prove it to us and indeed "make one better than that." Growing up without much money will make you resourceful.

I still have a really cool rubber band gun my dad made.
