This did not turn out near as good as I wanted, but it's good enough for the grandkids when they come to visit. I changed the overlay to Madagascar Ebony and added a flamed Curly Maple back veneer. I used Curly Maple side bound binding, upgraded to a Sullivan ebony bridge, and bone nut. There still work to be done on the setup, but it plays and sounds good.

Back side, not much flame to brag about.

Very nice, Doug! You should be proud of that one.
Best,

Looks good. You gotta start somewhere and with as nice as your pickguards and armrests are you have some more mandolins in you too.

PJ this is not his starting point. This (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=15;t=51394) was Doug's starting point.

Doug - you're cranking them out pretty quickly now! #What is that - two this year?

Looks good! #Keep up the good work! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

(Sound clip sounds great too!)

Doug, I love the dark burst, the maple binding, the guard, and the gorgeous rose inlay! I thought that the f-holes were a bit, well, LARGE, but then I listened to your sound sample--very nice melodic playing BTW, but concerning the tone--it sounds clean and clear, dry and deep--quite good for certain! It is brand new and it will open up more when it gets played in, but in the recording it sounds very good. I think you have the talent to build, most definitely. Your first mando is gorgeous too-I love the combination fingerboard extension/guard design.

Very handsome and well done! #I don't really care about flame/no flame against my tummy... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I like it!

Thanks!

A little too quickly on this one. Aside from dealing with some of the quality issues with the kit itself, I made several stupid misstakes to recover from. Plus a trip to the ER for 5 stitches. #Overall I'm pleased with the results. I'd just like to re-do a few things that can't be changed now. I do love that rose inlay, it's gorgeous in person. I wish I'd used it on the first one instead.

Thanks to all for the encouragement.

I am TRYING to build a IV kit. Mine is in various pieces still. I have contacted Ken about a crack in the head/neck and he says he will do something about it.

I wish that I had the talent that you have! I can only hope that the mandolin that I build will be 1/2 as nice as what you did with your kit!

So you stained the back dark to cover up the blood! I see.

Nice sounding instrument, too. The recording made me miss my budgies. Nothing like parakeets to make a recording sound like a kitchen tape!

I find blood to be a very good wood dye, but I won't use it for a guitar. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I don't if Kramer (cockatiel) is singing along or complaining. He does not like me anyway, he's my son's bird.

Doug, Sounds great! where can I find the TABs for that tune?

The song is an old hymn. I'm not sure, but it may be found in "Heavenly Highways". My kids complain about my music. They say it all says the same, "When we die we'll be happy." Nice tune though.

Doug, that looks great! #It has a kind of "vintage" look to it. #Keep it up!!
