Per a related thread, I am heading to Prague in November with the wife. I was hoping to capitalize on the exictement of being on vacation in order to get her buy-in on buying a new mandolin while there. However, after communicating with several Czech builders in and near Prague, all said they only build to order, and all would require a down payment now through within a few months in order to have an instrument ready for pick-up in November -- but unfortunately I am not in a position to order a custom build at this time.

Plan B (inspired by Cary Fagan's post (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=12;t=38876) from 2006): can anyone out there recommend any music instrument stores in Prague that typically have new and/or used Czech mandolins for sale?

Note: I will be in Vienna as well during this trip, so any recommendations for stores in Vienna that sell any sort of quality mandolins is welcome as well.

Now the Czech Republic certainly is a place to go to inquire about mandolins (guitars as well as banjos). While I am located in Germany and the festival season being over when you get there, I guess that youŽd be best advised to inquire from said luthiers where there would be the best store to check out their instruments. Check here: http://www.nugget.at/html/contact.html for the contact of the primier Austrian bluegrass band. They might help you with locating dealers.

Why donŽt you come over when thereŽs a lot more to see and do, like May till September http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Then youŽd have to check out here: www.ebma.org

Good luck with your quest!

Hi from Cary. Enjoy your trip. I really recommend that you go to the store I mentioned in my post, Countryon. They may have some instruments. Also, they would know of any bluegrass playing.

Funny that you say they only build to order. When I met the builder of Krishoff (am I getting it right?) mandos there, he said he had some for sale and seemed to want me to come to his place to see them. You might try when you're in Prague just in case they do.

Surely there must be some lebeda mandos available somewhere, since he has a small factory/shop and produces a fair number. But where I'm not sure.

good luck!
