I started this Siminoff kit around Thanksgiving. From doing this I learned alot, and had fun. I thank everyone on the Cafe who answered questions for me. I also learned alot from the building section. Special thanks to Bill Halsey and John Harrick for all of their input. The finish is french polish. One piece back, and red spruce top. As far as the sound goes I cannot tell any difference in it from my Gibson. It's just great. Thanks for looking. John

John -
Very nice work! I have a Siminoff F-5 kit on my workbench right now, have gotten all the tools I think I will need for now (minus finishing - I plan to do a hand-rubbed varnish). I am just waiting for my basement to warm up some in spring weather (no heat down there!).
I can only hope mine looks even remotely as nice as yours.
A couple questions -
1. how did you scoop out your FB extension?
2. how did you do the petghead inlay, especially the name? Did you buy the letters stock somewhere?

Wow! VERY nice, John, especially for a first mandolin--another "Dude" in the making? Sorry, I just had to type that http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I love the color tones you used, kind of a orange/reddish/amber not much brown. Looks good that way. I may try a scheme similar to that on my next one.
Mazel Tov! Looks good, how does it play and sound? Jd

That looks great.
If the uncontrollable urge to acquire mandolins is MAS, what is the term for the uncontrollable longing to make one?
