I had one of those many years ago. Quite cute. I think the patent may be available on the google patent site.
There is some hazy info saying that Turturro was related to the Calace family of Italy and there was some sort of falling out. Nicola Turturro also made lyre mandolins like this one. John Bernunzio sold it a few years ago.

Jim, that is wild. Thanks again for the link to the Washburn book by Hubert Pleijsier, I found a signed copy (# 365 of 500 )online. Great book.

I saw that "turturro turn-over" mando-uke in a uke book a few years ago. Cool. What's it sound like?

The uke part sounds pretty good, the mando is thin and unfocused. But it is cool.
