This'll be a fun one. #I was recently asked to fiddle/play/sing for a Sportsman's Banquet that's coming up on the 14th in our community. #There'll be lots of killed stuff there and lots of hunters, so I'm going to gear the tunes/songs towards animals and such, so I'll play tunes on mando and fiddle + sing some songs.

what would yall add?

my list so far:

Rabbit in a Log
Squirrel Hunters
Shoot the Turkey Buzzard
Forky Deer #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Muskrat (Doc's version)
Groundhog
Nail the Catfish to the Tree
Cacklin Hen
Cluck Ol Hen
Horny Yew (EDIT: Horny EWE)
Devil Eat the Groundhog
Snowbird (Bruce Greene's. #what is a snowbird, anyway??)

I'm sure I'm forgetting some that I play, and that my list'll grow as I think more about it. #So many great fiddle tunes about animals. #Let me know any suggestions.

I remember my dad singing The Preacher and the Bear. I think Phil Harris recorded it in the early 50s.

Oh, a preacher went a huntin' one bright and early morn.
T'was agin his religion, but he took his gun along.
He shot himself a big fat quail and one little measly hare.
On his way home returnin', he met a big grizzly bear.

I used to sing in a quartet. We sang at a hunting/gun club one time. About half way through our performance I realized we were standing in front of the bullet trap on their handgun range.

Swinging on a gate.
Nail that catfish to the tree.
Possum up a gum stump.

If you get rid of the last "a" it would make a nice haiku, eh?

Oh, there are others. . . . .

Tim O'Brien does a great version of Dylan's 'Man Gave Names to all the Animals' on Red on Blonde, might be one to consider....maybe retitled 'Man Takes Aim at all the Animals'

Neat idea David M. But depending on your clientelle they may not understand. I serve on a couple boards in which we host banquets like that. Our next is March 8. We will have between 300 and 400 in attendance and the vast majority of the crowd will be business people, judges, attorneys, doctors , etc. The vast majority of the crowd will be those that have never gotten their shoes dirty in the woods. Let alone know the difference between a snowbird and a finch.

Ole Slew Foot

You can't beat Ole Slew Foot.

For a really cool take on this tune, try and track down the version from BR549's live EP.

There's also an old Fiddle Tune called Shoot That Turkey Buzzard. The thing is also known as Davey Dugger, Waitin' On The Federals, and Turkey Buzzard.

Five Pounds of Possum #(Reno and Smiley)

Well my kids are all hungry, my dog ain't got a bone
I just got off work and I'm just drivin' home
It's an hour after sundown, and much to my delight
I see five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight

ch:
I see five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight
If I can run him over, everything will be all right
We'll be havin' possum gravy for dinner tonight
I see five pounds of possum in my headlights tonight

Don't want to kill no chicken, don't want to open a can
Just a little bit closer and I'll have him in the pan
I'll just switch my headlights from dim to bright
I see...

The Keeper Did A-Hunting Go
Foxhunter's Jig (Irish slip-jig)
Cumberland Mountain Bear Chase
Ol' Blue
Here, Rattler, Here
Grey Goose (Leadbelly)

There are many, many great hunting songs from the English tradition: John Peel, The Innocent Hare, Dido,Bendigo, but they might be less suited to your audience and current repertoire. #There are also innumerable songs about fishing, but most of them are focused around commercial fishing -- fishing for a living -- rather than sport fishing.

I love putting together "themed" musical programs -- finding songs that work around a particular subject, whether a topic, historical period, ethnic group, or social attitude. #Good luck with yours.

Many a hunter's second best friend is his dog, so here are 49 tunes about, or referencing, "dog" at TheSession.org (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/index/search?name=dog&type_id=&mode_id=).

(...and here (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/index/search?name=hunter&type_id=&mode_id=) are 46 tunes with "hunter" in the title.)

Chinquapin is a tree species, and I have no idea why anyone would want to hunt one
Actually, the nuts were what was hunted. A variant of the chestnut, chinquapins have been pretty much wiped out, I guess, by a blight similar to the one that did in the chestnuts.

"The trees produced a bounty of sweet nuts every year without fail, and was sought as a nutritious food source by humans and wildlife. The wood was highly prized because it was rot resistant and made excellent railroad ties and fence posts."

-- from the Chinquapin Foundation, which is trying to preserve the few stumps and shoots that remain.

Okay, so it's rooted in stereotypes of the Irish, Scottish and Welsh, but done with gentle good humor.
