I just came from a festival and noticed Green tape covering the Gibson inlay on Frank Wakefield's mandolin...what gives,is this a statement for some sort of protest?

Thanks for the rapid response. I had a feeling he was making a statement.

Grisman should be on that list too!

Both Grisman and Wakefield have done the tape thing. These (http://www.candlewater.com/ReturnToEmoryGap/) pictures of Frank are from may of 2006. He was already doing the green tape thing then.

Seems like Gibson's missing a sure thing there. Frank gets out and plays, and I think he could sell some mandolins for the Gibson company. It could be that Gibson's original offer, if serious, just got lost in company personnel changes and so forth, but I'd think that the ball was worth picking up!

Goodbye, I am so happy that Frank has had such a fine relationship with "the Company" one would think that a relationship like that would sour over time...
Hello

I love Frank's "contrarianspeak" I welcomed him one time in the approproate manner and he just looked at me smiled and said "You're WIISE" What a character.

I'd like to see a Gibson Andy Statman signature A model while we're at it. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Just imagine a Gibson "Frank Wakefield" model-- top extra thin, scroll ridge and other carving details partly gone, flowerdy tuner buttons-- I'd like to see it!

If you really want a Frank Wakefield model then paint it with auto enamel and bake it in the oven to cure it out. Sure brings out the "sound" in it.....

Frank has a unique, custom made tailpiece cover overlay on his 23. It's a thick piece of ebony inlaid with a flowerpot. Nicely done (although it got in my way when I picked that mandolin).

After giving Frank a mandolin, I'm sure Gibson would love to hear Frank say, "Gibson's the worst mandolin in the world. Whatever you do, don't buy a Gibson." I don't think the corporate types would get it. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Maybe we should write some letters!

I hate frank, he never taught me anything about life or playing mandolin.

Last night I found out through a different source that the style of speech Frank uses is called spoonerisms, or should that be forkerisms!

Then by not coming out with a Frank Wakefeild model Gibson is paying him a spooneristic compliment. If they do produce a Wakefield model it should be baked for 24 hours and marketed as Pre-opened. Goodness gracious, good and light.

Afraid you're right Don, they'd just wonder what they had just done. #I can hear it now:
Frank-"sorry you gave my this thing"
The "Man"- (scratching head) "Huh?"
Frank- "I don't like this banjo at all"
The "Man"- (Same pose) "Huh?"
Frank- "I'm going to stay a while"(closing case and walking out the door)
The"Man"- "Well, Hello then"
Frank- "Now you're gettin' Wiise"
I agree, gotta be red. Maybe with the formica bridge?

Is he still using some epoxy-gook bridge saddle?

Believe it's bakelite. Here's Frank "study'n up" at the house a couple of years ago.

It's fiberglass and epoxy, made in the shop at GE when he worked there.

Whatever it's made out of, it looks...unique. I saw it first back in the late 70's when he stopped in Kalamazoo to have a new nut fitted at "The Company." No one there knew how to fit one so he came to Homespun Music and Jan Bloom did a very nice job, Frank was quite pleased. PLayed the Alvarez A-800 in the case with Joel Mabus on guitar. Fun days back then!
