Just bought a Vega cylinderback mandolin. Looks all original and in great condition. Appreciate any information or comments. Here are some pictures. The serial number is 38325. Thanks.

It looks good. Do you have any larger photos you can post?

Drop a PM to MikeB here on the Cafe. Mike has had quite a bit of experience with VCBs in the last year, and he knows a lot about them now.

The serial number puts it probably somewhere in the 1921 - 22 range. Welcome to the small group of Vega owners who think they are the cat's meow.

Jo sent me some pics to post larger. This looks like a near-mint 207 to me. I esp like the flamed back and the reverse sunburst of this one.

How is the top on this one? We have heard a lot of horror stories around here. I hope yours is solid and in good shape.

No problem, Jo. How did you find such a lovely-looking one in such great condition? Was it from a dealer?

This one looks like a new instrument! How did that happen?
Thanks for posting the big pics Jim.

My husband and I just happened to go to our local music store for new strings on another mando and they brought this one out for us to look at. Fell in love with it and decided to buy it. The top is in excellent condition as is the rest of the instrument as far as I can tell. I've been playing it a lot the last 2 days - sounds good.

JOMAC, Is that the one from Tobias music? #They had one that looked like that from the pictures. #I sent out an email to MMO members saying "somebody go buy this"! #It really looks like beauty. #Congratulations.

Yes, Linda, this is the one that was at Tobias Music. He mentioned that MMO had been notified. As to Dave's comments about it looking new, it does look new, and the only thing I can say about that is someone put it away in the proper place. When it came in to Tobias Music it only had 2-3 strings, so he re-strung it.

Wow, it almost makes my 205 look plain! It looks like it was purchased and put away virtually un-played, what a windfall!

That's pretty much how it looks. Used a little and put away safe and sound.

Hah! They have it listed on their site as a 57 reissue strat for $1099. That wasn't the price, was it?

I just noticed that there is no binding on the fingerboard and shouldn't some of the inlays be football shaped? I wonder if the fingerboard has been replaced to accommodate modern fret wire? Does not lessen the amount of drool coming from the corner of my mouth though.

That description is for the guitar above the Vega.

I might be getting a little mixed up here, but didn't that style of label come after the paper one?
The reason I ask is that I didn't expect to see the earlier enclosed tuners in combination with that label.
My memory is not what it used to be but that just seems a bit unusual to me.
Great find Jomac!

Does anyone have any information on flight cases for a cb mandolin? Any recommendations? Thanks.

Do you mean like a Calton? I would not check it in baggage in any case (no pun intended).

If you wanted to spend the money for a Calton I think they can be made with custom interiors to fit the CB.

Otherwise, i think a TKL or the generic Canadian archtop cases would do just fine. I have my lowly warped 202 in a Musicians Friend A style cheapo hardshell case.
