Well, it is not to my taste either, but it is very much in the "tradition" of heavy-metal music. Many heavy-metal guitars are more radical than that. Each to one's own.

So that's what the Romulans play while in their warbird-class ships at warp 8.
All we need now is a banjo shaped like the Enterprise...

Reminds me of the solid body electric guitars Ovation was making in the 70's. If memory serves, those looked worse.

To each his own. Somebody somewhere likes that, and chances are he or she is a good person.

There's one of those on ebay on a regular basis.

Looks similar to the Warlock Guitars and basses. While it's not on my wish list, I think it's cool a mando family instrument can make it into the Goth/rock/metal world.

It's Stu Bilcock again, aka "Cassandra Elk". The same maker that made the Geyerleier which we discussed here (http://www.mandolincafe.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=16;t=50199). His instruments are pretty wild and (comparatively) dirt cheap. This particular Ebay listing is by a reseller (Franksmusic) who charges up to twice what the same instruments sells for directly from the maker.

I have one of Stu's Strat-shaped octave mandos, 21" scale. For what it is and for the price I paid (100 Euro) it's a fun instrument. Assembled entirely from cheap standard guitar and bass bits but it works. Very playable, although there's a touch lack of sparkle in tone -- I'm thinking of swapping the pickups out and rewiring it which should make it a bit more lively.

Not the worst I've seen. Not one I'd buy either. Now that Enterprise-shaped banjo, on the other hand... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Ditto. I got to see Quicksilver MS in concert many moons ago, in the front row, right in front of Cippolia. Blew me away! He was playing a stock red SG, though. It had a Bigsby, but no batwing stuff.

What a great thread!! #LOL!!!

Yeah, I see those on eBay pretty often too. # I like to think about where/when/how they get played and mostly -who- plays
them. # And I like the notion that someone who would like that look has to field the questions that we do about these things. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I've never had any affinity for those sorts of shapes of instruments, but if someone can get all the way in it and make that kind of statement, bravo.

I LOVE the GrannyShreds!!!! #Splendid! Well done!!

I once had the privilege of engineering some recording sessions that John Cipollina was producing. #I had no idea what to expect from the reputation of the times when he and Quicksilver were playing. # He was a real gentleman, pleasant, funny and extremely meticulous, and kept very detailed notes on yellow legal pads, and in a gorgeous, fine hand, too.

Ahh, lordy... it takes all kinds, donut?

Batwings? Looks like blades to me... You know, everyone always want a new AXE to do some serious SHREDDING... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

It's not my style to say the least, but I'm sure someone somewhere is looking at that and saying "Oh yeah, that's the one."

Nice work on Granny shredding, Jamie. That's hysterical.

Speaking of horrible things...

Always remember - if you can see Chuck Norris, he can see you. If you can't see Chuck Norris you may be only seconds away from death!

I can't take too much credit. The original had her playing a powder blue strat (I think). Sometimes Niles brings out the mischievous side in me.

For a similar style of music there is Tempest with lead player Lief Sorbye often playing an electric double neck mando top octave beneath (see Photos at bottom of link (http://www.tempestmusic.com/html/lief.html)). They're pretty high energy and pretty fun to boot.

"It ain't my style," said Casey...

Still, would be fun to show up at the next Irish seisun or bluegrass jam with a "Death Metal Elektrik Bouzouki" and scare the poo out of everyone!

steve V. johnson

By itself nobody would hear the "Death Metal Elektrik Bouzouki" ... some small comfort, that, anyway...

Now, when your roadie rolls into the seisun/jam with the Marshall half-stack on a battered hand truck, then there will be poo.

Buy it for the neck, then change the body.
Somebody Photoshop with a Flying Vee body.

And add The Shjreddin' Grannie too.

Old guy that I am, I only care about how it sounds and how well the player plays it...if someone wants to give the bat-zouk away, I'll take it and pay the postage!
