After viewing this video I think the banjo is more suitable
for my skill level.

You do know that wasn't really Mr. Scruggs playing don't you. Someone edited the audio portion of the video trying to be funny. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I posted this on the banjo hangout...it would seem that some banjo players just don't appreciate satire.. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif -- they'll probably delete my post and revoke my membership...

Ok I think the Mandoline can sound very good when
its played with a light touch but unlike the Banjo
it is very forgiving. You can be late or early on
a beat but it won't show that much. #The Banjo OTOH is a very exact and you have to be
spot on for every note
Hi Curt! Love the new routine!

I enjoyed this one more than the guitar shreds. Looks like the folks at the Banjohangout have a pretty good sense of humor about this. I imagine a similar reaction to a WSM Shred down in the bluegrass section here.

I don't get it.

I mean, I know what is going on, I know its supposed to be funny, and I know and respect some of you who do get a chuckle from it, but I have to admit I don't.

Its not that any player or any instrument is sacred or anything, it doesn't bother me that the video pokes at Earl, I would sell one of my kidneys to be so good that folks poke at me on You Tube.

Its just that I don't see the humor.

That's OK, some folks didn't think Buddy Hackett was funny, and he tears me up every time.

I agree, that is why I said someone was trying to be funny. I have to admit though while I think I have a pretty good sense of humor it is apparently not like a lot of other folks' sense of humor.

The most interesting feature of this, I think, is the humour test on the orthodox banjo community. After reading some of the posts in their thread I am glad to be here - even on a bad joke, it is better to either just smile or shrug (takes only two muscles each, I chose the latter).
Apparently, it is easy to kill a righteous man with just a heart condition and a joke; maybe that was what the youtube poster had in mind...

Not only do I find it 'un-funny', but it's painful to listen to.

I get the humor in it because Earl is so great at what he does. I see the implicit compliment being paid to him by making the audio soooo bad. I can also see how it's disrespectful as well. Seems like a lot of work to go trhough for a pretty small gag... A bit like listening to a 3 minute knock knock joke.

I prefer the irony of satirical humor. #In today's crazy world, it's very easy to derive simple humor by parodying iconic figures because of the seriousness with which idols are regarded.:blues: #There is always a risk of offending some folks in this enterprise. #For me, this is much funnier than, say, Erma Bombeck, whom my mother favors.

The humor, here, is predicated on the fact that Earl is a great banjo picker. #It would not be as funny if it were a parody of, say, me -- I am not great. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

After those guitar shreds from last week, I found this pretty humorous. # Of course we all recognize Earl as being the king of bluegrass banjo, so the satirical humor just made this far more entertaining than some of the guitar shred videos.

As I said over at the banjo hangout, if you listen really closely you'll see that the problem is that Lester is throwing Earl off-time with his guitar. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It is pretty funny. And really what they did with Earl is pretty tame compared to what they did to Pat Metheny with that guitar shred, overdubbed with those growls and yells, which personally I thought was hysterical.

I was just thinking that it will take a few mandolin shred videos to really test the sense of humor at the cafe. I was also thinking that more people here would be amused by Chris Thile Shreds than by Bill Monroe Shreds. Just a hunch...

Well, they finally shut the thread down on the hangout. They couldn't quite handle it..
