Rule of thumb: Loars are always priced at more than I can afford. When they were $10K, I couldn't afford them. When they were $40K, I couldn't afford them. Now they're $275K, and I can't afford them. Whenever I accumulate enough money and tradeable instruments, the price has spiraled out of my reach.

And one does have a hard time justifying an instrument that's worth nearly twice the market value of one's house...

Anybody know anything about a Loar that sold for $275K? That's news to me!

Might be wrong about the price (when it gets into six figures, everything goes blurry), but:

[A] Gruhn's current Loar in stock is listed at $205K
[B} MOMI has one on eBay with a "Buy It Now" of $675K (I know, I know, you can ask anything...)

I probably should have just said "$200K" (which is "only" $50K more than I could reasonably expect to sell my house for...).

I remember seeing that mando at eldely in a display case when i was a senior in highschool. it was the first time I had ever heard of Lloyd Loar. I had just bought a 1977 F-5 and Couldn't understand what could possible make that 1924 any better. Now I wish I would have took out a loan and bought it.

I bought a house for a rental here in Louisville (CO.) in '85 for $78k and sold it in '06 for $227k. At first glance the Loar looks like it would have been a better buy but basically other people bought the house for me and there were the tax advantages. I think I would have had a bit of a problem getting the bank to make a loan for a $40k mandolin.
But the Loar would have been a lot more fun!

I remember that period as Loars=40, no more, no less. Stood there for a few years, then...

Every now & then I open an early (late 60's - early 70's) copy of Bluegrass Unlimited. Hindsight can be painful!

but Jim H., you don't have to paint and put new carpets in a Loar, either !
