Will,
Thank you for the suggestion… I agree and I like the traditional aesthetic of the name on the headstock. This particular mandolin was a special order and the client wanted a simple headstock design with no logo.

I plan to record some sound clips this weekend. Ahh, on second thought, maybe I’ll ask my buddy Philip to record some sound clips.

Very nice aesthetic. I really appreciate the clean lines, elegant details, and the logo-free peghead. I wish more makers would sacrifice the advertising in favor of the timeless look.
Looking forward to hearing one of these.

You know, I really like the lighting in these photos - kind of blueish. It makes the frets and strings look fantastic. Beautiful mandolin!

Thank you… All of the photos were taken in my workshop with natural light. My shop features large north-facing windows, which allow enough light to take photos without any artificial lighting. I would get better results using a tripod, outside on a cloudy day, but the northeast winter doesn’t permit that. It’s convenient that I can take photos while I work… one reason why I enjoy posting photos on the Café. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I want to give credit where credit is due… The shop was designed and built by Steve Selin, a violin luthier who shares the shop space with me. Steve and I work independently, but pool resources with maintaining tools and shop expenses. We also collaborate with research and share knowledge. It works out well for me and keeps my foot in the door with what’s happening in the violin world. This, for someone interested in acoustics, is fascinating.
Troy, nice work. What number mandolin is this for you?

Thanks Tod…this A-5 is #10. Although the number is a bit misleading. I began building mandolins in 1998… then apprenticed with a violin maker, full-time for five years, where I assisted in building violins, some cellos and a few basses. During that time I built only a few mandolins, but learned traditional woodworking methods and varnish techniques. After my apprenticeship, I built mandolins part-time and did repair work. However, in 2007, I began building mandolins full-time.
