You could get the answer right from the horses mouth so to speak. Go to this (http://www.davealvin.com/dave/dquest.html) link and send a message to Dave Alvin.

Conrad,

A written transcription of this song, and an interview with Dave Alvin, was featured in Acoustic Guitar Magazine within the last 6 months or so - check their online site for the month it appeared. You may need a subscription to look at the song transcript online, but there is a good chance you could find the back issue for sale in a guitar shop.

On guitar, the song is fingerpicked out of C chord shape (C, Am, Em, F, G), but it is capoed up a couple frets). It might be in the key of D (?)

From my best memory, the relative chord pattern is:

"I left my home ... ( I / I / I )
East of the ohio river ( I / vi / vi)
Her father said ... ( I / I / I )
For I had neither gold... ( I / vi / vi )
But my darlin dear... ( iii / IV / IV )
For I think its fair.... ( I / vi / vi )
When I return .... (IV / I / vi)
As the the king of CA." ( IV V / I )

The John Cowan Band does a version of "King of Calidornia"
with guitar player Jeff Autry handling the lead vocals and
I have a nice version from Merlefest 2007. Jeff does a very
credible job with it.
