Last year I ordered 2 new F5 Varnished from Jim and Ryan Triggs. I got the first one in August and it is great. Last week I received #2 and it is a really special mandolin. Slab cut back, flowerpot inlay and killer tone and volume. Thanks to Jim and Ryan for 2 super mandolins. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

None of my business really (and feel free to tell me so!), but out of curiousity, why did you order 2?

I'm curious too, if the reason is different top woods, I'd love to know what you think about the difference between them. Also, hook us up with a picture of the back if you can. Congrats on the mando!

Guys I ordered 2 because I have a bad case of MAS. I have 2 Gibson DMMs, an Altman, a Vessel H5X Mandola and the 2 Triggs. The first Triggs has a beautiul tigeer stripe back and the #2 is one piece. Both have Red Spruce tops from wood that Jim had for 25 or 30 years. Those who can't play well collect. Below is the back of #2.Sorry for the resolution but I could not get higher resolution pics to upload.:D [B]

How does your Altman compare to your other mandolins?

The treble on the Altman is very strong but does not have as much bass punch as some of the others. Yes Mandoplucker, you and I have the same strain of the disease

Dittos

I "play" every evening, and sometimes for an hour or two in the morning—no one could practice more than I do—but you wouldn't want to hear it!!!!

So, I collect, too.

Glad to know I'm not alone.

That slab back looks great!

Two DMMs? Will you hire me for whatever company you work? With that kind of loot, I'm sure your recommendation will have some sway.

What a collection... Absolutely beautiful instruments. I'm not much of a player and can't afford to collect, so I'm just sitting here with a really severe case of MAS that I can't cure. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Keep the duct tape close, my mandolin still has one more song in it.

Mandobuff, The Altmans starting around #8 or 9 have a lot more depth of tone. If you get a chance you should play one for comparison.

Very nice. You mentioned that you have a Vessel H5 mandola. I just ordered a 2Pt Oval Hole mandola from Gary. How do you like yours.

I absolutely love the H5. Fit and finish are A+ as is the tone and volume. I have had more fun with this instrument than any mandolin. Gary builds a great instrument
