I think that unlike other acoustic instruments Mandolins develop a personalitie after you have owned them awhile. I have a A style roune hole that is manly & serious but otherwise dull . I also have an F style that is happy go lucky yet has a sad side as he knows as I am just an upper level intermediate player he will never realize his full potential. So is your mandolin just an inanimate object or does it have a personalitie ? & if it has one what is it ? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

I have a 20's lyon and healy c style that is alot like a drunken Irishman(or is that the owner? #HMMMMM?). #The longer I play it, the warmer and louder it gets. #Everyone I play with kinda looks at me and says "Yeah, he's loud, but I can't understand anything he is playing!"http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I have a Newson F style that is definitely female and a flation 1N that is definitely male. The F is sweet and patient and can sing as sotly as a summer breeze, but when she gets excited she is LOUD with a voice that carries all over the place. The Flatiron on the other hand is loud all of the time and has a rougher tone. It is a bit rowdy and likes the bass end a little better than the trebble.

I would say that my mando, a Vega from about 1911 hasn't revealed a specific gender. I do perceive it as the master/guide of the music, only it has chosen to reveal all its secrets slowly as I progress in my learning. It is encouraging and comforting. Make sense? John

After reading this yesterday morning during work http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
I went home and played my good old Weber Gallatin.. Thinking of what gender and what kinda personality it posseses... and i've come to the conclusion it is definitly female and a sassy one at that.. Some nights it will be well spoken and yell right out.. and other nights it will turn cold shoulder on me... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
Looks like i am gonna have to tame this girl.. or learn to get sassy with her! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
