"Sunny Side of the Mountain" sounds like a lot of Lester and Earl, and not much of Bill, at leat to these old ears. #Must have been from 1945-47.

Because he's Bill Monroe, a "Chuck Norris" of his era!

Yup - it's actually a very similar break to the recorded version, but still breathtaking. What gets me is when he does that type of thing and sings at the same time...

I'm going to have agree the Sunny Side of Mtn. sounds more like early Flatt&Scruggs as I am hearing Benny Martin kick off on the fiddle and a bass slap you didn't hear so much in Monroe's band. You hear the announcer before and after mention Lester only. Sometimes even back then Monroe would let the boys do their own thing and do other songs without him but with Martin and not Wise on the fiddle I don't think this is the case here.

I'm with you on that...unfortunately not one of my talents. Saw a cool Youtube video of Sierra Hull on guitar in her basement with her dad and a mando player who was pretty solid. It threw her a little at one point when the bass fell out, and I thought, "Maybe she's human after all..." Then she flew into a break and was talking to the mando player about how losing the bass messed her up as she's just mashin' on it, and the mando player starts singing the bass part while doing some mashing of his own, and I was pretty much disgusted with their talent at that point http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Also, not to be sacreligious or anything, but, man, Earl Scruggs makes me want to play my banjo more (my wife hates him for that!)...

Ah yes, but can she pat her head and rub her stomach in circles at the same time?

I'm glad everyone's enjoying these. "Sunny Side of the Mountain" could very well be Flatt & Scruggs. The CD I got it from was made from an old record and wasn't labeled and I was told it was all Bill. There's one other (partial) song that isn't by him on there, so it's possible that it's F&S doing it. Anyway, here are a few more from the Opry (with some nasty mandolin breaks)

And here's one more, not nearly as old though. It's Monroe doing "Land of Lincoln" at Bean Blossom in 1969

Interesting to hear that Monroe was aiming for the high lonesome sound as early as that. For instance, the original recording of True Life Blues is in A, and this one is in C.

Gosh that's a great version of true life blues.. a real lesson in blues in c. You really can never stop learning this style! We have been singing high harmonies recently and one minor failure to hit pitch will really screw it up - for us, if the monitors are not just right, we are in trouble. This was really brave music and pushes edges that are still not pushed much further.
