Great flame and I have always liked the rather rustic look of the pre-Gibson Flatirons. I have never heard one of these F models I didn't like!

Beautiful F5. Is that the original fretboard? Have not seen a Flatiron F5 without the extension. Welcome to the cafe!

Nice! I want one of those pre-Gibson Flatiron F5s to match my A5-Jr. so bad!

Can I get the serial number and some photos emailed to me. I'd like to add this to my pre-Gibson Flatiron archive project. You can email me at fatt-dad AT comcast DOT net

Thanks for the comments....

The fingerboard is not original to the instrument it was renecked under warranty under the supervision of Bruce Weber in the Montana plant back in late 80's....) because the original truss rod was way too deep in the neck and had become exposed (1/16" circle on the back of the neck)

I'll get the serial number, I'm traveling for thankgiving right now but it was made in January 1985, and was the 31st
made. It was purchased new from Mandolin Brothers in New York...

Without seeing the serial number, I will guess it's this:

01850031.

I had one (bought new from Mandolin Bros. also), it looked like this:

10850106

That was October, 1985; 106th one made.

Nice. She's older than me http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ! Nice figure on the back. The peaghead is very classy as well.

Well the a-models are in the mid-$2,000 range (few examples in the last year). I'd guess a pre-Gibson Carlson-signed F-5 would be in the upper $3,000 to mid $4,000.00 range (probably the latter). Then again, who's selling?

Well...the sale fell through...so I'm still the owner...will probably post it for sale later...see all the guitars and banjos in my signature...the mandolin just divides my attention too much...

What is that little piece of leather between the nut and the truss rod cover? Part of a strap or something?
