I've heard that this is out. Has anybody seen the dvd or heard the album? . . . . I do have an unhealthy Planxty obsession . . .

I've seen the DVD. They were way before my time, but I enjoyed the show. I can't get Liam o'Flynn's pipes out of my head, they keep on playing 'Give Me Your Hand' (english translation of an Irish title) in my head http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

RTÉ (Irish national broadcaster) showed an hour-long programme of footage from those Vicar Street gigs. I recorded it on DVD but I'm going to buy the "official" DVD as well.

I've been a big Planxty fan for the past twenty years or so. They had split up before I was old enough to appreciate them, so it's great to see them playing together again, as good as ever and obviously enjoying it.

I recently bought "Words and Music" simply because there's a picture of Andy Irvine on the back playing a wild looking instrument with a pin-block tuner setup - anybody know what that is? Does he play this instrument on the DVD?

It looks similar to the old #English guitars (http://www.usd.edu/smm/1292.jpg) or maybe a Portuguese guitarra? (http://www.fernandezmusic.com/Images/Viera%20%232.gif)

I have relieved myself of my copy of Words and Music . . . but I would guess that it is a Hurdy Gurdy, which Andy does play . . .

Hi Matt,

No, it wasn't that wild.. Looked like a mandola with the pinblock tuners and a scroll-gooseneck headstock thingamabob.. Maybe it's just an English guitar. Can't tell how many strings it has. He's playing it with a pick.
