Triplets are notes that are 1/3 of a quarter note beat in length, and are very common in anything with a swinging rhythm. They're usually written as eighth notes, sometimes with a 3 overtop of them.

I'm sure there's more info on the web somewhere that will give you some basics on music theory and rhythm.

Triplets are a form of borrowed subdivision. When you subdevide notes in 4/4 for example: 1 whole note = 2 half notes. 2 quarters = 8 sixtennth notes. When your using borrowed subdivision, your are in fact borrowing from another meter and deviding by 3 instead of 2. You can have triples on any note value in 4/4 time (or any time for that matter). You can have half, quarter, eightt, etc. triplets, not just eighth note triplets.
