Our Cafe member Michael Reichenbach aka Mandoisland has a great web site (mainly in German). He lists an impressive number of old mandolin tutors, one of which is by Mr Salvator Leonardi:

www.mandoisland.de - click "Mandolinenschulen" - choose "Salvator Leonardi" (second column from left, third down) - scroll down

(sorry, I didnīt succeed in making direct link or attached picture)

The excercises are not shown, but I love the presentation. Especially this:

"... During my long professional career I have seen, at different periods many changes in the style of playing music in vogue, the last one being the tzigane style.

So, I am wondering if the "Jazz" will last long enough for me to treat this subject very widely. However, I am sure it will remain, as long as the fox-trot is in vogue; so I am giving here some exercises and practical examples..."

Teacher: What kind of music do you want to play?
Student: Jazz.
Teacher: Forget it kid, jazz is dying.
Student: Then I'll play at the funeral.

According to Sparks (The Classical Mandolin) Leonardi died in 1938 - so I will be allowed to offer the complete Leonardi method (maybe with some exceptions) as a free download next year when the 70 years copyright has ended.

best wishes from MandoIsland

Thanks for you Michael! (And for Jim who pointed to your website!)

Thereīs something Iīd like to ask about your old mandolin tutors, but as this does not concern jazz anymore, Iīll continue on the classical section of Cafe...

thanks, Arto
