This should be in my hands next week. It's from Paul Newson in Michigan. Red spruce top, sugar maple back, x-braced, varnish finish. Color was inspired by an old Gibson F4. I'll post more pics when I can.

Looks great Jim! I'm always impressed with Paul's work...When I ordered my Newson, I had a hard time deciding between a varnish or lacquer finish...I ended up deferring the decision to Paul who chose the lacquer finish...I think he thought it would be more durable? Or?? Anyway, he makes a great mando!

Thanks for the nice comments. Here's one of the headstock with California poppies, no flowerpot:

And the top:
Darren - Aren't you in the Bay Area? Maybe we can compare them at the next Co-Mando jam.

I was in the bay area, but moved down to San Diego last year...But, I'll be up there for a week in September! I'll see if I can bring mine with me. Pics can be seen here: Newson A5 (http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/darrenjweiss/album?.dir=/Newson+Mandolin&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/darrenjweiss)

I asked Paul to experiment with a one piece maple bridge when he built this mandolin. It sounds great with it on! I've tried the loar style bridge a few times, but always end up putting the maple one back one right away...It produces a louder, and more clear tone...

hey jim, is the back of the peghead also covered by an ebony veneer? Do you have a picture?

That's a beautiful inlay! I have to say that I like it more than the flower pot (sacrilege I know).

Tofuhippo - Yes, the back of the headstock is ebony too. I'll post some finished pictures later.

Biomando - Thanks; Paul does some great inlay work and a custom inlay is included in the regular price. Since the mando was coming to California, I thought poppies would be nice.

I just wonder if they are really "California" poppies?http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Here's the back of the peghead. I think the ebony looks pretty good with gold hardware:
