An old gruff Civil War buff around here requested that I learn the tune "Lorena" for him, saying its his favorite Civil War-era tune.

Anybody know of this tune who could point me to a recording or something?

It's (John Hartfords version) also on "Songs of the Civil War" along with a lot of other great tunes.

someone posted a link, then removed it. if anything i said in reply to that link was taken to offense, I humbly and sincerely apologize before God and all...i didn't have a chance to hear the midi file, but it was really a lovely looking site, and I am extraordinarily interested in checking it out! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

There's a great recording on John Hartford's Gum Tree Canoe as well as on most of his live shows, which you can download from bluegrassbox. The live versions are even better.

I remember a version of "Lorena" by Red Rector and Norman Blake on their record...
Is that available on CD? It was a cool recording....

The Seldom Scene plays an instrumental version of this Civil War era song. I've also heard the John Hartford version. Yes, I suspect there is tab out there for this one but I just play it by ear.

Music was very important to the soldiers during the Civil War and Lorena was a very popular song at the time - on both sides. The words of the song are typical of that era's writing style. Supposedly, this song evoked such powerful feelings of "melancholy", that many officers forbid the playing of this song.

There's a great version of it on John Hartford's "Live From Mountain Stage" album.

Check out Jay Ungar's Civil War CD -- it has Lorena and a bunch of other good songs for the mando, like Hard Times.

Hey Thanks for this thread. I am reading Cold Mountain, and this is one of the tunes that the main character describes hearing during on of his battle scene memories. I was hoping to find it somewhere!

I write

Yes, good record, and I especially dug the album cover painting, with Red's F-5 headstock jutting out of the picture frame.
