I got playing with a new toy (http://www.centrance.com/products/mp/) today and recorded a couple of tunes... and I figured I'd share. I've been teaching my new Duff some manners for the last few weeks. Paul calls her "Orange Crush"... which works for me.

Awesome picking, and the Duff sounds just fantastic. I frequent your blog and am using your "Frog on a Lily Pad" as a learning tool right now. Your picking--and Mike's--is my current ideal.

Very nice clips.

A few questions about your "production process":
- Windows, or Mac?
- What kind of cam?
- What mic?
- What software did you use for capture and processing?

Thanks,
- John

I am glad to see that your mandolin has arrived at its destination. Hopefully the associated 'secondary charges' were not too much. Love your picking and yes, the instrument does have an Aussie accent. All the best from across the Pacific Ocean.

"Old Mountaineer" is a tough one, but you really captured it well. The slides in the second part usually leave me looking for housework to do in frustration.

Thanks Steve. Old Mountaineer is a bugger for sure... I've not gotten it where I want it quite yet but it's getting there.

And thank you 8strings... so far so good. And she definitely has an accent http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I set her up with my favorite kangaroo strap so she'd feel at home.

John, I'm using a Shure KSM32 on my beloved Macbook with it's built in camera and recording it all with QuickTime Pro. The MicPort makes it extremely easy to throw stuff together... here's a picture...

Just in case you're interested, Orange Crush is an REM song. Not sure about mando content, though.

I thought we were talking about the great "Orange Crush" defense of the Broncos - Gradishar, Jackson, Alzado, et al. One of my favorite moments at this year's Symposium was Mike's solo performance of Old Mountaineer at the final night's concert. Some of the most powerful & soulful mando playing I've ever heard. Thanks, dasspunk.

Very nice job on the slippery/slidey B part of Old Mountaineer. You and the Duff sound wonderful. Don't forget to play it back by the bridge too when you're breaking it in so it develops that hateful tone as well as the beautiful tone in the sweet spot.

I've got a very pumpkin Pomeroy A oval that's very close to your Duff's color. Love that orange!

The new Duff sounds great! And, let's say your pickin' rates a spot in the "doesn't suck" catagory. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

That's a fantastic sounding mandolin and you're a fantastic player! You inspired me to record my own take (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~garnetb/me_old_mountaineer.mp3).

I've been working on Old Mountaineer for like five months now, it's a lot of fun to play if a little frustrating at times... woo!

Nice picking both of you! Great!

I also play Old Mountaineer and I do it pretty straight off of the Compton version, much like dasspunk. It's a nice tune indeed.

Nice picking!

I'd love to hear a side by side comparison of all your mandos with the same recording setup-a la the Aches-Loar-Gil thread. Assuming you're taking requests that is http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Nice, Brian. A sickation or a case of the Mondays?
I'm fond of the on-site personal day, myself.

I wish... no some stomach thing... feeling better now but not super fun night/morning.

Okay, here's one last one just for fun and I will allow this thread to die... Bring Your Clothes Back Home (http://www.dasspunk.com/duff/bringyourclothesbackhome.mp4)

Tell us more about the Mic Port...how does it connect to the computer, USB?

I've been using a MAudio Mobile Pre, but this new gadget looks pretty cool!

Sorry Andy, no jam for me tonight. Say hi to the boys for me http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Pete, the MicPort is cool and the device I always kinda wished existed. Goes right on any mic, has phantom power, headphone jack, level, phone level, and pusb out. Plug it in, get levels and hit record. Cake. Sounds pretty good too.

Get well soon, bother. Put down the orange crush (great name BTW) and enjoy some Pepto Pink.

Dasspunk--thanks for posting those videos and detailing your recording setup.

I don't study Monroe-style playing, so pardon my ignorance as I ask a question about your playing. Is the partial muting of most of the licks you play on the E strings intentional, or is that a side-effect of something else you're doing? I ask because I notice the same thing in Monroe's playing, but have always chalked it up to the fact that he always had a high action, which led me to think he didn't do it intentionally as much as his mandolin just wouldn't be played any other way.

Anyway, not to threadjack but I'd enjoy hearing your thoughts.

Are Old Mountaineer and Beech Bottom supposed to be movies? They save as .mp3 files and then wont open in an mp3 player. EPB is a movie file and worked fine. Thanks for your help

They are mp4 files. Download the latest Quicktime and all will be well.

Did you take off the pickguard? How come?

.... Whatever you do, I would not add to or take anything away from this mandolin. I love the minimalistic look of it, the orange colour and the 'missing' pickguard. A long 'unscooped' Florida extension would have probably also annoyed you, I am sure. Great mandolin, great player, fantastic combination.

Crowder, I'm not sure what you mean about "partial muting" on the e string. I may just be missing the fret http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I needed to send the pickguard back to Paul for a little surgery. Nothing major. I'm sure it'll make a full recovery and appreciates your thoughts and well wishes.

Thank you all again for the kind words.

And pardon my suggestion. You obviously know how to get the whole tonal range from orange crush, from the sweet spot to back by the bridge. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
