The Guitar is Red Spruce on the top and Black Walnut on the back.
The mandolin is Red Spruce on the top and Maple on the back.
I think Mr. Price ONLY makes instruments with Red Spruce tops, but I could be wrong.

What other woods does he use for back and sides on his guitars? Does he do anything besides dreadnaughts? What kind of pricing? I looked at Pricetone for my mandolin purchase, but ended up with a Passernig. I have heard good things about Pricetone mandolins, but not much about his guitars. Nice guy, too.

Skippy: You're a lucky man! I recognize that guitar back. I bought a mandolin from Lewis about 5 months ago, and when I was at his house he showed me the guitar he was working on, yours now, ... I remember thinking it was one of the most beautiful backs I've ever seen. And I know it sounds great ... I've played two other guitars of his and they were monsters!

Pricing is great. At the last conversation I had with Mr. Price, Mandolins were still 2500 and guitars were 2000. It's not a custom shop per se, you don't tell him what you want (although I guess I never asked if he did that... )but more buy instruments that he has made. His trial period is generous and he banks on the quality of the instrument (i.e. he'll ship it to you, if it's not what you are looking for ship it back no hard feelings) Although I haven't been able to shop anything back to him in a while.
I highly recommend people looking into his instruments the value on these are awesome.
As for other backs, he mentioned he has some other guitars that are not black walnut, I'd recommend giving him a call an asking. A very nice person who will take to the time to discuss what he has available.

I can't get over the piece of wood he used in that mandolin neck. VERY different!

Part of that wood for mando neck is it is 5 years old and has been played heavily by me (acid hands) the different coloration is solely from playing (no steel wool to remove the finish) When I purchased it, it had the same finish as everything else. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
