Okay, the other "Post a Picture Of Your Luthier..." thread spawned this one.

Here's Canadian luthier Michael Heiden playing the fiddle with Brother Mule at last weekend's Chiliwack Bluegrass Festival. #Also seen in the picture are (l-r) Brian Wicklund, Michael, John Lowell and Eric Thorin.

The top of that bass looks interesting. I wonder what it is.

Yeah, there was some incredible burl on that top. Spruce was there, perhaps he knows what kind of wood that was.

Birdseye maple veneer.....

Forgot to ask the make of the bass, but it sure looked cool...
Sounded good too. That guy's a great player...

Man, try to run down (bootleg) recordings of John Reischmann's "Bill Monroe Tribute Band" with Michael and Paul Shelasky on twin fiddles...
Great stuff....!

I would love to hear that! Last year he brought up Caridwen Spatz to do twin fiddling with Greg and rest of the Birds - man that was cool. They did a pretty hot version of Roanoke if I recall correctly.

Mandopete,
Brians last name(and mine)is Wicklund not Wickland. We get that all the time, drives me crazy. Both from Minnesota but he claims no relation (probably best he doesn't get involved with me) http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

My bad - corrected above. Brian is one of the best fiddlers around!

Here is a photo that I found of Michael on the internet from 1979 (on the fiddle stage left). This is his gypsy jazz band the Kitsilano Kat Kickers(aka Mystery Pacific). They apparently opened for Grappelli in Vancouver! You can listen to a clip of them here. (http://alisonhogan.com/Hogan_Website_Audio/All_Of_Me.mp3)
