Is this mandolin on eBay a Vintage 1914-1921 Gibson F-2 for sale on eBay a Gibson or not? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....&ih=003 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130146667896&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003)

Mahogany sides, back, and neck. Look at the headstock shape, the scroll shape and carving (though it's interesting), front and back, the top point, the binding (especially on the scroll), the bridge. I'd say NOT Gibson made. A few things remind one of the very earliest Fs on the mandolin archives, but others don't. No label. I'm no expert. Anyone think it's a Gibson?

I just wandered into this post. I do not know Bob Burns. I have never heard of him. He has nothing to do with OAI, if there is an employee by that name. He is not a manager with the company. Gibson does not do verifications of the manner she requested. While anything could have happened at Gibson in the day, this would have been so well documented and written about that everyone would know. There are not many secrets in a company that size.

It is not unusual to see mahogany or birch used for mandolin backs and necks. It is clearly not maple. That part could be right, but the scroll and headstock are wrong and I don't think anyone with any credibility would stand behind that mandolin. There are other issues. The bridge is not right. The tailpiece base is a recent one. THe neck joint is a bit suspicious. That in addition to the things everyone else sees gives one pause to rething the maker of this instrument. Gibson? Not very likely.

Thanks, all. Especially Big Joe. I checked several categories on the cafe, but not the one where the link was, or I wouldn't have written. Thanks for that.

The auction ended with the reserve not being met. #The last bid was $1001. #There is one other F2 on eBay currentlly being bid around 4.5k. #I wish to amend that statement. #That is 4.5k "Buy it now" price. I do question bidding 1k for this one though. #Look at this one on ebay and compare to the one on this thread.

the one you posted the link to is older than a 1921, the scroll is unbound and it has the different fretboard extension.

it looks like its was made between 1912- maybe 1911 -and 1914 (sometime during 1914 they changed the fretboard extension shape and in 1916 it looks like they started fully binding the scrolls from what the archive shows)
