Lovely. Is the headstock pieced? Or is that just a peculiarity in the grain?

...And, let's not forget the spruce. If you want my observations on how the tung-oil finish sounds, PM me.

Rick,
Beautiful from all angles. Just tung oil?
Regarding the headstock, Thanks, I was looking at the back of the headstock--looks like it has "wings". Just wondered.

The headstock would have wings with a one-piece overlay. I like to see the color of the ebony without the stain. Very nice work!

So the whole mando is finished in tung oil? And it seems to work? Can you elaborate a little for us?

Yes.
And it seems to work?
It works perfectly; great protective finish that is hardly even there.
Can you elaborate a little for us?
I wanted to conduct a little experiment, mostly based on how our distressed Yellowstone sounded when finished; Tung Oil seemed a natural choice. The result was an instrument with a thick, buttery tone, and balanced, pronounced volume.

So cool. It should be stain resistant too http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I've seen tung oil been used for countertops http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
It would be cool to have a sound clip of how it sounds... I love natural/blonde finishes combined with dark binding. This is outrageously beauteous.

I used to have a gorgeous flamed cherry butcher block countertop finished in tung oil, and ever since putting it in I have imagined that finish would be great for instruments. My plan is to some day build a kit and finish it that way.
Nice looking mando.

WOW! What would you compare the tung oil finish to? I have been thinking of having this done to my new mandolin.
Gorgeous mandolin. I bet it smells nice too with the tung oil finish - I have a guitar with the same finish and it smells like an oil painting :)
