The reason the mandolin has 8 strings is so that at any given time at least two of them might be in tune (but probably not with each other).

Now this is for real. I saw a banjo player - a pretty fair picker actually - say the following:

"C'mon guys, lets kick 'er off. I'll tune up on the way." And he did.

It's been said that a bluegrass musician spends half of his or her time tuning and the other half playing out of tune.

The only difference between a 14 inch pizza and a musician is,you can feed a family of four on a 14 inch pizza.

Why are mandolins so small?

If a banjo breaks a string tell the player to tune the rest of them to that one.:p

If you tune a banjo in outer space would there be any mandolin players to hear it?
