What is that long transverse bar on Osmar's (I assume, the young melody player) bandolim? Sort of an armguard?

I think that's Armandinho Macedo (though I mostly see vids of him playing flashy emando) and his dad Osmar. Dunno what the transverse thing could be, other than a really really long bridge. ??
