I was wondering if anyone could point in the right direction. I am considering purchasing an old Gibson A model and can't seem to locate specs and or the differences between the models. It appears that some have neck binding, some with pick guards some without but it is hard to tell on instruments this old as many have had repairs or are missing original equipment.

Just buy one that doesn't need any new glue - ha.

This is as good a place as any to start:

Gibson A Model Guide (http://www.mandolincafe.com/archives/gibsona/gibsona.html)

I was looking for that page, I thought I was crazy because I couldn't find it.

Oof, that doocument is an old composition of mine and has lots of inaccuracies in it. To some extent, the mandolin archive is my new version of that guide http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

There's some half-decent general advice there, but I'd suggest you use www.mandolinarchive.com, plug in a similar serial on the search and look for pictures that show the most common features for models close to yours

Also describe it here and we'll all chime in with what we know

If it's in good(for it's age) condition, any of the Gibson A models listed should be pretty good.

Gruhn's Guide to Vintage instruments lists all the changes and all the differencers over the years for A model Gibsons.
It's not a straight forward descriptions but it will chart the variations.

Vintage guitars Info (http://www.provide.net/~cfh/gibson8.html) has a rundown similar to the Gruhn book.
