Hi:

I'm looking for a challenge. I'd like to find the tab or sheet music of something at this level:

On the mandolin. (I know that is a Uke, but I'm just using this as an example.)

Can anyone help me out?

Check out the Jethro Burns books on Mel Bay. He was the precursor on the mandolin to Jake S. That style BTW is loosely called chord-melody and you can work some of it out yourself, if you know what you are doing.

"That style BTW is loosely called chord-melody"

I thought that it's called voice-leading. No matter ... just deconstruct the tune into its basic harmonic and rhythmic building blocks and your on your way.

Hmmm...any better descriptions than that? I can play what I can read, but am currently building my theory, so I'm not quite sure at the moment how to do what you are saying, which is why I'm looking for tab or sheet music.

You mean something like the link above?

I'm not much of a blue grasser, but if it would help my playing I suppose I could learn.

Hah! "Learn from the master of bluegrass mandolin" I would not say that JB was a bluegrass player. He certainly could play some of that but his real love was jazz and he seriously admired guitar players like Django Reinhardt. Some of the pieces in that book are definitely graduate level material and not for the faint of heart.

Then maybe I'll order it. My heart is not faint. Thanks!

Although listening to some of the samples from that book, they don't seem very difficult.

If I were you, I would just go to mandozine.com and search through the tabledit files for professional level songs. There are lots of Chris Thile songs that are rather difficult, as well as many others from a wide variety of styles. Plus, you can get them in tab or notation, or both! Good luck. P.S. if you're into classical music too, I would recommend getting a copy of J.S. Bach's partitas and sonatas for unaccompanied violin. You can find it at most music stores, and it transfers perfectly to mandolin, presenting fun and challenging works to play. It would take a lot of work to run out of material to practice with those!

I don't have that newer book but have this one and there are some killer pieces:

I have been trying to play Jethro's Tune for years. I agree about the Bach mentioned above. A little less challenging than the pieces for violin are those transposed for violin originally intended for cello. Nice music in any case.

I'm looking for a challenge.

Get some books meant for a different instrument (guitar, electric guitar, violin, piano, banjo, sax....whatever) and figure out how to put that stuff onto the mando neck in a way where is sounds like it belongs there, and then practice up all those physical moves which will be different from routine "mandolin" playing.

Axis: Bold As Love (http://www.amazon.com/Jimi-Hendrix-Experience-Guitar-Tabulature/dp/0793523915/ref=sr_1_4/104-7594662-5371945?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184329250&sr=1-4) transcriptions, notation & guitar tab.

Django Reinhardt (http://www.amazon.com/Django-Reinhardt-Definitive-Collection-Recorded/dp/0634034308/ref=sr_1_4/104-7594662-5371945?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184329452&sr=1-4) transcriptions or Django Reinhardt (Ayeroff book) (http://www.amazon.com/Django-Reinhardt-Sheet-Music-Ayeroff/dp/0825640830/ref=sr_1_16/104-7594662-5371945?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184329452&sr=1-16)

Kreutzer: 42 Studies or Caprices for the Violin (http://www.amazon.com/42-Studies-Caprices-Violin-Method/dp/0793525942/ref=sr_1_2/104-7594662-5371945?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184329751&sr=1-2)

or get the Clarence White book (if you can find a copy), or one of the Oak fingerpicking manuals (w/Mississippi John Hurt, Rev Gary Davis, etc. tunes)

Look into classical duo style, perhaps the Calace preludes, like this one played by Ralf Leenen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALrncsl1lWo).

This is not a mandolin book but check out "Jazz Blues Etudes - Blues for Violin" by Jack Wilkins. This is in notation only. Comes with a CD. These are all challenging pieces and fun to play. You can find it at sheetmusic.com for about $15.
