Interesting. Scale is actually 445mm (not 44.5mm) which would be about 17.5 inches. Monzino is a recognized maker but this looks like a nice simply decorated flatback mandola. I didn't know that Milanese referred to flatback instruments.

BTW I assume this would be a tenor mandola?

Jip! It is what we in Europe call Mandola or Mandola tenore. The tuning is GG-dd-aa-ee, exactly one octave lower than the mandolin.

Best,

Alex.

What we call the Octave mandola. I just checked my American Conservatory mandola and the scale length is 16 5/8 inches (422mm). This is tuned like a viola: CC-GG-dd-aa

I would have thought that the other mandola would have had a considerably longer scale. I guess it uses heavier gauge strings.

Yes, and the one that is tuned: CC-GG-dd-aa we call the Alto Mandolin, ´Mandoliola´ or Mandola contralto. It´s swinging stringlength is ±37.5 cm.
