OK, following requests on the classical genre forum, hopefully here's a picture of my new mandolin made by Kai Dase of Nottingham, UK (who is primarily a violin maker but happily branches out now and again). It's next to my trusty old Buchanan for comparison, and it's a pretty awful photo. Sorry. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
It sounds very sweet in comparison to the Buchanan, but if anything is a little louder. It's like comparing a nylon strung guitar to a steel strung, I suppose. It's also very light - 644g compared to the Buchanan's 862g.

Nice photo, thanks for sharing http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Is the Kai Dase mandolin flat top like the Buchanan, or is it arched?

I would also imagine that the tone would be different with the different tailpiece arrangements. The physics would be different with the downward pressure of the Kai Dase vs. the upward on the Buchanan.
