Here's an interesting Hondo oddity:

The seller says it has a 30" scale. I've been thinking a shortscale 8-string bass tuned a whole step or minor third below mandocello would be the ultimate rhythm instrument for *heavy* metal. It could even be tuned to mandocello pitch with the right string gauges.
Anyone ever tried tuning a shortscale bass guitar in fifths? I remember someone mentioning the idea 'round these parts, but I don't think anything came of it.
